Andreescu has been a creative and versatile player in recent years, plagued by all kinds of injuries. The 2019 Indian Wells champion has not competed since breaking into the Tokyo quarterfinals last October, beating Katie Boulter 6-2, 6-1.

Now, the No. 130 Canadian comeback will have to wait until spring as she recovers from the surgery.

“The training is going well and I’m very excited that the Merida Open is the first game of the 2025 season,” Andreescu said on social media. “However, I accidentally started having some severe pain in my stomach, which led to an emergency appendectomy.

“The surgery went well and I was recovering. My plan was to go back to the clay season on the court and was stronger than ever. Thank you so much for all your support – don’t want to wait for the game.”

The Merida Open is scheduled for February 24th.

Last season, Andreescu competed for the S-Hertogenbosch final on the grass, losing to Liudmila Samsonova, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7. Andreescu later made an appearance in the last match in October, winning five straight wins against her Tokyo quarterfinals.
