Small League signer Sean Newcomb Manager Alex Cora told reporters (including Alex Speier of the Boston Globe), who may be the fifth starter for the Red Sox, could start the season. If Sox breaks camp, Sox will need to add Southpaw to their 40-man roster.
Newcomb hasn’t been in a consistent rotation role for seven years. He started the Braves in 2018. Since then, the previous first-round draft pick hasn’t reached five games in the Major League Baseball season. Newcomb looked like a potential midspin early in his career. Scattershot Command pushed him into the bullpen and eventually entered Michael’s territory. Newcomb has allowed an average run of 6.66 in 98 2/3 frames since early 2020.
The 31-year-old has made seven major league appearances for the A in each of the past two seasons. Last year, he worked 10 innings in 10 games and walked eight batsmen while recording seven strikeouts. He gave up running seven times. Newcomb opened on the 60-day injury list with a sore left knee and was released in July so he barely made a pitch. The Massachusetts native signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox in January.
Newcomb received excellent spring training. He has played 14 1/3 innings and hit 13 innings in three walks. Still, he won’t get a seasonal rotation position without injury. Brayan Bello,,,,, Lucas Giolito and Kutter Crawford It starts on the injured list throughout the year.
Giolito and Bello should be back in mid-April, so Newcomb’s job in the rotation may be short.
