Yankees showing interest in Andrew Chafin

Yankees interested Andrew Chafin“, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. New York is in the market for a left-handed bullpen arm. Heyman reported earlier this week that Tim Hill It’s also a possibility.

Both players are natural targets for a team that is not expected to have a lefty in the bullpen. The Yankees have only two left-handed pitchers on their 40-man roster: Max Fried and Carlos Rodon. New York has yet to add a veteran left-hander to a minor league contract, so they may be on the lookout for multiple lefties in the coming weeks.

Chafin, 34, has been a durable and reliable middle-inning player for a decade. He had another good season, posting a 3.51 ERA in 56 1/3 innings between the Tigers and Rangers. However, most of the positives came from his first few months in Detroit. By the end of July, Chafin had a 3.16 ERA and a strikeout rate of nearly 31%. Things started going downhill after a deadline deal sent him to Texas. He had a 4.19 ERA with the Rangers. His strikeout rate dropped to 24%, while his walk rate nearly doubled to an unsustainable 17.9%.

While that’s not a great score, Chafin has a long track record. Despite having middling velocity, he fanned about 28 percent of batters three years in a row. His pitching error rate this year is as high as 15.4%, which is the second-highest rate of his career. Chafin walked more than 12 percent of his opponents in consecutive seasons, reflecting the change in command. He can handle any handed hitter, though, so he shouldn’t have a problem finding another major league contract. Chafin has been a workhorse in the bullpen, throwing 50 innings in seven of the past eight full seasons. (He threw 49 1/3 frames in 2018.) His only injury break over the past four years was a two-week miss in April of ’22 with a groin strain.

Chafin signed one-year deals the past two winters worth $6.25MM and $4.7MM respectively. Texas declined a $6.5MM club option at the start of the offseason. Chafin’s job tenure is one year and the base salary is likely to be between $3-$5.
