Why Ultralight Titleist GT1 Fairway Woods Are Great for Tour

In the past, the Titleist “1” line of metalwood series was targeted at players with slower swing speeds who needed a lighter swing weight to help increase clubhead speed.
But now, Titleist’s new GT1 metalwood changes that. The GT1 fairway wood has landed in Titleist staff member Doug Ghim’s bag.
On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Everything Equipped, Titleist Metalwood Director of Product Development Stephanie Luttrell explains the versatility of the GT1 fairway wood.
“We’ve now introduced center-of-gravity adjustment and fore-aft adjustment into this model,” Luttrell said. “Part of this was necessitated and driven by our conversations with Tour. Our feedback loop with the Tour team is integral to our development process.
Each model has adjustable flat weights that allow fitters to not only add weight to bring the GT1 Metal to the standard weight configuration, but also move heavier weights to the front to reduce launch and spin.
Luttrell said that when Titleist Director of Player Promotions JJ Van Wezenbeeck saw the GT1’s large footprint and shallow face depth, he told them he could use it for Tour players.
“and [GT2 and GT3 fairway woods]some players really look for and thrive because of facial depth,” Luttrell said. “And they’re able to relax a little bit after that and launch easily as a result. So this front-to-back adjustability that we’re introducing now allows us to really meet the needs of tours and the need for dynamic loft, launch and spin. The needs of medium speed players.
It also suits players like co-host Chris McCormack.

“I’m trying to find the best launch and spin window and playability and transitioning from the longest irons out there to the fairway woods,” McCormack said. “I’m a player who historically has struggled with hybrids, but hybrids are supposed to do everything I need. I just tend to miss them on the lower left.
When McCormack was at the Titleist Performance Institute getting the full package, he was surprised to find a 21-degree GT1 7-wood out of a drawer for him to test.
“In testing, I mean, this was the first shot. That’s the reaction we heard,” McCormack said. “I hit it and I was like, ‘Ha!’ This is exactly what I was looking for.
