Why Rory McIlroy can dramatically reverse a severe drought in 2025

Last week, the new golf season arrived and most of the PGA Tour’s top players descended on the Kapalua Plantation Course, where Hideki Matsuyama shot a historic 35-under par. Results, won the championship.

With the golf season coming to an end, GOLF Subpar hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz thought it was time to look ahead to the big season ahead and predict who will take home golf’s biggest prize in 2025.

As always, talk of the majors revolves around Rory McIlroy and his quest to break a decade-long drought in majors.

While neither Knost nor Stoltz picked McIlroy to win the 2025 Masters, Knost did see McIlroy winning not one but two majors in 2025 from Quail Hollow The PGA Championship begins.

“There’s a guy named Rory McIlroy who’s going to be playing, and he kind of likes Quail Hollow,” Knost said. “He only won there four times. He had 10 top-10 finishes in 13 events. He made the golf course look like a putting course with some of the lines he took.

“I know the world is going to pick Rory to end his severe drought – which has been going on since 2014 – but I think Rory has done that here at the PGA.”

Knost watched as McIlroy lifted the Wanamaker Trophy and then marked his return to major championship glory with victory at the 2025 Open at Royal Portrush. You may recall that McIlroy holds the Royal Portrush course record (61) and suffered a quadruple bogey on the opening hole of the 2019 British Open to miss the cut.

Knost believes things will be different for McIlroy winning a major in his home country this time around.

“I just think this is going to be a big year for this guy,” Knost said. “The last time the Open was here, he hit a little eight on the first hole. He was the talk of the town. He was a hometown favorite. He carried the weight of the country on his shoulders and hit two at the start of the tournament. out of bounds.

“I have a feeling he will get his revenge when he gets back to Royal Portrush. I gave Rory McIlroy his second major of the year.

While Knost believes McIlroy will go a long way in breaking his major drought, Stoltz doesn’t expect the four-time major champion to add to his trophies in 2025.

However, he did see two other European stars win majors in 2025, including Jon Rahm’s victory at the British Open that silenced critics.

“He didn’t have the best performance last year, right?” Stoltz said. “Go to Liv. People are kind of sleeping on him. I think his drive to win a major is as high as ever. He hears the narrative. He knows about it. I think he wants to prove everyone wrong of.

“The way he plays golf. The windows he can hit. He can hit low, high, short, whatever. I like what he’s been able to do in a lot of the major events, but I feel like the Open is where he’s been able to do that. A place to aim for. Why not this year?
