As a test case, let’s consider a popular form of competition – four balls, a two vs. two-time format where each team’s partner plays his or her ball, using the lower scores of the two scores as the team scores on each hole.
Maybe you’ll play this format with friends and argue ahead of time to discuss the correct way to set up a game with barrier indexes. But it is not necessary. It’s an easy process, especially if you have a score broadcasting app like Ghin. Here is a step-by-step guide.
First, let everyone get the obstacle. (No barriers? You can sign up here.) Then determine the course barrier for each player based on the difficulty of the course you are playing and the T-shirts played, which is an adjusted number. The application will calculate automatically.
Adjust the lowest value player to zero (scratch) and determine the differences between the other three players. Then, apply 90% of the barrier allowance in each of these three players; the application will also calculate. Bypassing the difference, this is the stroke every player deserves.
Why have a 90% allowance instead of 100%? This change was conducted in 2024, and studies conducted at the game’s governing body showed that it would be fairer to play the obstacle allowance relative to players in the game, rather than those associated with Scratch.
