Vladimir Guerrero Jr. seeks $500mm NPV

10:52 pm: Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi wrote that the team’s NPV is close to 450mm, suggesting they are at the high end of the New York Post’s initial report.
6:34 pm: last week, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Tell ESPN that the asking price in his extension negotiations with the Blue Jays is 600mm of the South. The star first baseman has not publicly determined his exact needs, although he pointed out that he is looking for a deal of more than 14 years.
The movement’s Ken Rosenthal provided more details, reporting that Guerrero hopes to have a net current value of 500mm to bypass the open market. Without the extension or with higher overall guarantees, that could be in the form of 500mm+ in the form of 500mm+, which still pushes NPV to $5 billion. A hypothetical 14-year extension worth 500mm will carry about 35.7mm of annual value and will run through Guerrero’s 39-year-old season (assuming it starts this year).
Delay is obviously a sticky point. Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of the New York Post report that Toronto’s overall transaction range is 500mm, but include deferred currencies. According to the post, the NPV will land between $400mm and 450mm. This still represents the third largest guarantee in the history of the alliance. Juan Soto Without delays, it is easy to keep the record at 765 mm. this Shohei Ohtani The deals are worth approximately 461 mm and 438 mm respectively by the league and the players’ association.
Guerrero seeks a number that will make him in net present value only. The asking price he reported was far less than the Soto currency, which was so easy to break in previous precedents that it could be an outlier. Still, it seems to land more than the 50mm to 100mm (as NPV says) that Jays is willing to go. Guerrero said he was not interested in continuing negotiations other than the opening of spring training. He had opened the door to rethink, but said at the start of the camp that he expected to test free agents.
Jayce at least expressed willingness to expand his budget beyond Guerrero’s asking price for star players. They seem willing to match the contract Ohtani accepts from the Dodgers. Their exact offer for Soto is not clear, but it is believed to be priced between 600mm and 700mm. This shows that they don’t completely dislike this signature, but it’s also the fact that the largest contract in franchise history is still a relatively small $150mm George Springer trade.
Toronto’s latest offer is a significant improvement compared to their opening talks. Guerrero said in the offseason that Jays’ offer was in the 340mm range before Soto bidding. Although the Soto price point didn’t make them willing to write a blank check for Guerrero, it seemed to contribute to their price of over 60mm+ in terms of existing value.
Guerrero is a career .288/.363/.500 batsman. His second-best season was his second-best season when he edited at .323/.396/.544 and 30 home runs a year ago. In his best case, he looks like one of the top five batsmen in the game. However, he did not maintain this level every year. He was in the 2021 MVP vote (selected second in that year) and the top six in 24 years. In two seasons, he has reached .269/.341/.462 in his last 1,400 sets. It’s still very good, but not the kind of overwhelming numbers that force the team to essentially ignore the questions about his defensive image.
Assuming he enters the market, Guerrero is likely to be the highest free agent in his class. Kyle Tucker A better overall player, arguably, but the Cubs outfielder will land in free agency at the age of 29. Guerrero will enter the market at the age of 27. The two-year gap gives Guerrero a better chance of reaching a deal that lasts over a decade, although teams generally don’t want to make very long commitments to the first baseman.
