Trevor Rogers, Jorge Mateo is unlikely to prepare for opening day

With camps for spring training, clubs often provide latest information on players’ health or lack of players’ health. Oriole General Manager Mike Elias today notified members of the media, including Matt Weyrich of Baltimore Suns and Roach of Masnsports.com Roch Kubatko Trevor Rogers and infielder/outfielder Jorge Mateo Opening Day is unlikely to be healthy.
The news about Mateo is not particularly surprising, as he underwent a major left elbow surgery in August. That was to repair his ulnar collateral ligament and add braces, and repair the flexor tendon. The procedure is on his non-workout arm, but the expected recovery schedule will still take several months. O sometimes says Mateo may be ready for the entire season in 2025, but now it seems his recovery will extend to at least this season.
News about Rogers is everywhere because he didn’t spend any time on the injury list last year. According to Elias, he suffered a co-injury of his right knee in January. It’s unclear how it happened, but Rogers himself told Kubatko about a second. Although the lefty downplayed the seriousness and said he was already playing, he was clearly behind for a few weeks.
It doesn’t seem like this will be a devastating blow, but it’s another frustrating development of Baltimore’s tough tenure. Rogers won from the Marlins with the Marlins, who scored 15 runs in 19 innings in his first four games and was selected as Triple -A. He then won five starts for Norfolk with a 5.65 ERA.
Entering 2025, he is likely to be blocked from spinning performances to start the season. In addition to his bad results in 2024, O’s O’s added Charlie Morton and Tomoyuki Sugano In a year’s deal, the rotation will be with Zach Eflin,,,,, Grayson Rodriguez and Dean Kremer.
Rogers is still viable and may have been fined at another job in Norfolk if he is in good health. Those top five starters’ injuries may have opened a path for him, but he will compete with someone like this Albert Suárez,,,,, Chayce McDermott and Cade Povich For the sixth place on the depth map.
O’s obviously will love Rogers back to his 2021 form. The Marlins made 25 starts that year with 25 ERAs, 28.5% strikeout rate and 8.4% walking rate. But his era climbed to 5.47 the following year, and he spent most of 2023 on the injured list. Last year, he rebounded a bit in the 4.53 ERA before the trade, but then fought the above struggle after the exchange. The club will have a little less pitching depth, although they have other options there. For Rogers, personally, he would delay his return.
Ideally, Mateo would provide depth for the Orioles on the club bench. He played all positions in both battery and first base in his career. He is not a huge batsman, but threatens to steal 30 bases a year, does it twice and gets a strong mark on gloves in several different locations. Rosterresource currently projecting the club’s four-man bench consisting of catchers Gary Sánchez And infielder Ramón Uríasand Ramón Laureano and Heston Kjerstad Supports the outfield. Kjerstad is the only person in the group who can choose to give minors, and maybe once Mateo is healthy, he is easily sent to minors unless someone else attends IL.
