There’s not a lot of outdoor golf going on this time of year in the northern parts of the country (and parts of the southeast last week).
For us golf-sick people, that means dragging the clubs indoors and heading to some kind of simulator or indoor launch monitor setup. However, any old golf ball won’t perform as well if the simulator is run with a radar-based launch monitor like Trackman, as radar-based launch monitors perform best when they are able to capture the full flight of the ball .
The solution was to develop golf balls with radar-reflective markings on the underside of the cap, and Titleist’s RCT Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls captured market share.
But now, TaylorMade has launched surveillance-enabled versions of their own premium tour-level golf balls, the TP5 and TP5x, as well as the TRK-R golf ball.
“What good is designing the best equipment on the market if people can’t accurately understand how it performs?” said Mike Fox, global senior category director, TaylorMade Golf Balls. “The TRK-R ball now allows golfers and fitters to Know exactly how your TaylorMade equipment performs. “
The TRK-R golf ball has a small amount of liquid silver under its cover that emits radar-reflecting waves, allowing radar-based emission monitors like the Trackman to collect data more accurately indoors because they only have a short flight time before hitting the screen. Or net.
TaylorMade tested the new golf ball on a Trackman launch monitor and received the company’s catch certification.
“Radar-based launch monitors are probably one of the biggest investments in the game,” Fox said. “Ensuring these units provide accurate information to the golfer or fitter is just as important as delivering optimal performance.”

Aside from the silver color, the TRK-R golf balls are the same as the regular TP5 and TP5x golf balls available at retail, featuring technologies like Speed Wrapped Core for a soft sound at high speeds and a polyurethane cover.
In addition to the Qi35 Select Fit head with reflective markings, these golf balls are another tool TaylorMade is giving fitters this year to provide more accurate data for optical launch monitors like the Foresight GCQuad Max, and for Trackman provides precise measurements to track new Qi35 drivers.
TaylorMade TP5 and TP5x TRK-R golf balls are now available $64.99 a dozen Released on TaylorMadeGolf.com and will be available in fitting rooms at TaylorMade certified fitting locations.
