Royals sign Cavan Biggio to minor league contract

Royals announce utility Cavan Biggio Signed to minor league contract. Although it wasn’t mentioned in the team’s official announcement, it can be speculated that Biggio received an invitation to Kansas City’s major league spring training camp.
KC is Biggio’s fifth different organization in the past seven months. Biggio spent his entire career with the Blue Jays until Toronto traded him to the Dodgers in June, and Los Angeles released him two months later. The Giants then signed Biggio to another minors contract in August, but he did not play any major league games with San Francisco before being traded to the Braves in August. Biggio played four games for Atlanta before being left off the 40-man roster at season’s end, and Biggio elected to pursue free agency.
Despite all the action, Biggio hit a combined .197/.314/.303 in 224 games with the Jayhawks, Dodgers and Braves in 2024. , was initially viewed as a potential cornerstone for the Blue Jays. The PA hit rate was only .216/.325/.349, over 1159 PA.
The Blue Jays are short-handed at left-handed hitters and have been looking for ways to keep Biggio in the lineup at least in a platoon capacity, where he exploded with some efficiency in 2023 but returned to reality last season. While Biggio is not a great defensive player at any position, he has played first base, second base, third base and both corner outfield positions during his career. At the plate, Biggio was able to walk the bases fairly consistently, but that ability to get on base was diminished by a lack of power and a lack of hard contact.
If Biggio makes the Royals roster, he’ll be a complementary piece for left-handed hitting Hunter Renfrow in the right field or maybe Michael Garcia At third base, though Biggio’s third base glove was well below par during his time as a third baseman in Toronto. Biggio’s versatility could help him earn a job on the KC roster, or he could become minor league depth if he doesn’t opt out of his contract to pursue another opportunity with a new team.
