It’s been a tough decade for pirates. They did not make the playoffs between 1993 and 2012. They then obtained three consecutive wildcard berths, but entered the NLD only once. They started a new playoff drought in 2016 until today.
There are some potential signs lately. In 2023, they scored 20-9 at the end of April, but ranked 8-18 with a score of 76-86 from May 8. Last year, they hovered 48-48 in the All-Star Game but ended 76-86.
Despite the season’s failure, there are still exciting elements on the roster. The rotational talents they collect are one of the best talents in the league Paul Skynis But it also includes Jared Jones,,,,, Mitch Keller,,,,, Braxton Ashcraft,,,,, Bubba Chandler,,,,, Mike Burrows and Thomas Harrington. They also have position players Bryan Reynolds,,,,, Ke’Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz In place in the next few years.
Ideally, the club could have invested in this young core, but it didn’t happen this winter. The offseason included a noteworthy deal, which was actually a dangerous bet to bloom late, and several modest free agent signings. They issued 7 year-on-year deals, none of which were worth more than 5.25mm, and total spending was less than $20mm. Some of these moves are nice in isolation, but the total packaging is incredible.
