Here’s how people are reacting to Donald Trump saying lowering grocery prices will be ‘very difficult’
For those of us paying attention to the 2024 election, we know that part of Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign is a promise to lower grocery prices for average Americans.

Here are just a few examples of campaign activities for reference:
On August 15, Trump held a press conference in New Jersey. A table of groceries was placed around him. “Grocery prices are skyrocketing, how can a family afford it? So when I win, I will lower the prices immediately,” Trump said.
On September 23, Trump visited a grocery store in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, and paid for multiple customers’ groceries. “We’ll do it for you at the White House, okay?” Trump said as he waved to the crowd.
Trump said loud and clear at a rally on November 4, 2024:
Even after winning the 2024 election, Trump continued to claim that groceries were the main reason for his victory. “I won on groceries. A very simple word, groceries,” he said in an interview. “I started using that word. Groceries. When you buy apples, when you buy bacon, when you buy eggs, they double or triple in price in a short period of time.”
Now, Trump is in the spotlight for appearing to renege on a campaign promise on groceries.
In a recent interview with Time Magazine, Trump claimed that failing to lower prices did not mean his presidency was a failure.

During the interview, Trump was asked directly: “If grocery prices don’t come down, will your presidency fail?” To which he responded: “I don’t think so. Look, they lifted them up. . I want to knock them down,” Trump responded. “Once things go up it’s hard to go back down. You know, it’s very difficult.”
“But I think they will. I think the energy will bring them down. I think a better supply chain would let them down. You know, supply chains are still broken. It’s broken. You see. You walk down to the docks and you see all these containers…” Trump continued, before turning to a discussion of car prices and electric vehicles.

Here is Trump’s full response:
The internet reacted to Trump’s statement, which is exactly what you’d expect:
Former Congressman Adam Kinzinger said this in response to Trump’s Time Magazine answer:
“He’s already reneged on his campaign promises before he’s even taken office,” this person wrote.
“Trump on September 23: ‘Vote Trump and your income will soar. Your net worth will soar. Your energy costs and grocery prices will plummet,'” another person wrote.
“The whole rationale behind Trump is ‘Yes, he’s a criminal, yes he’s corrupt, yes he’s a racist, yes he’s a fascist, yes he’s sedition, yes he’s Currying up to the dictator, but at least! Now he admits he can’t even do that,” the user wrote.
