Newsom to veto the California bill, blocking prisons from collaborating with ICE: Report

California Gov. Gavin Newsom vowed to veto a bill that would prevent his state’s prison system from working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a report said.
Assembly Act No. 15 argues: “When prisons and prisons in California voluntarily, unnecessarily transfer immigrant and refugee community members are eligible to release from state or local detention centers to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for immigration detention and deportation Punishment and further trauma for the purpose of leaving the country.”
“The Ministry of Corrections and Rehabilitation shall not detain, provide information on release dates to immigration agencies, or respond to a request for notification, transfer to immigration authorities, or promote or assist transfer or assist transfer requests for any person who is eligible for issuance,” the Some languages of the bill read.
However, Newsom’s office told KCRA 3 that the bill would veto the bill if it landed on his desk this year. The site added that the legislation has been referred to the Parliament’s Public Safety Commission at present.

A Newsom spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital on Friday. The bill is sponsored by Democratic Congressman Mike Gipson, who represents Los Angeles.
Two years ago, Newsom vetoed Act 1306, calling for similar action.

He continued: “The bill will share and coordinate information after a person releases a large number of people from CDCR detention, and as a result, will hinder CDCR’s interaction with federal law enforcement agencies responsible for assessing public safety risks.”
Newsom concluded: “I think the current law has reached an appropriate balance in limiting interactions to support community trust and cooperation between law enforcement and local communities. So I cannot sign this bill.”

KCRA 3 reports that more than 10,500 California prisoners have been transferred to ICE custody since Newsom took office in 2019.
