Cubs, Marlins trade Matt Mervath, Vidal Brujan

Marlins to acquire first baseman Matt Merwes From the Cubs, according to Just Baseball’s Aram Leighton. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the infielder Vidalbruyan Traveled to Chicago in exchange for Merwes’ services. Brujan was assigned to assignment by the Marlins last week.

Mervis, 26, signed with the Cubs as an undrafted free agent in 2020. Hit .309/.379/.606 with 40 doubles and 36 home runs in 137 games at three levels in the minors. That included long-term success at the Triple-A level, where he hit .297/.383/.593 with 15 doubles and 15 home runs in just 57 games. Mervis’ performance was enough to land him among the top 100 prospects in the 2022-23 offseason, and his meteoric rise in the minor leagues has brought some optimism to a Cubs franchise that recently traded its long-term first baseman Anthony Rizzo Transferred to the Yankees before the 2021 trade deadline.
