William Mo wanted to tell a joke. Ten words in total. Wei Wei expressionless.
Mouw told the PGA Tour on Saturday, a day after PGA Tour pros hit a dozen bakers on a hole and a day after online jokes came in faster than you can say eight bogeys Race Social Media Team:
“First of all, I didn’t score 13 points today.”
Golf clap. well played.
To catch you up, Mouw entered the par-5 16th hole on the Pete Dye Stadium course at 6 under and left at 2 over during the second round of the American Express Championship. Two swings later and he was fine. He was about 25 yards away. But an 18-foot bunker wall blocked the golf ball, and now he hit his third shot over the green.
Then he jumped back into the sand pit.
Then his ball hit the bunker wall and trickled down again. And then he did it again.
Then he hit the ball on the green. Then he called back.
He then hit the ball down the fairway to the right. Then he pitched the ball over the green. Then he moved on. Then he putts. Then he putts.
Thirteen strokes in total. Of course, others suffered because of the hole. This is punishment. But every time, people get involved. Why? You’ll be surprisingly curious for a number of reasons, but mainly this:
What happened?
But can Mo speak?
On Friday, we understand that he was understandably lost in thought. On Saturday, he served. We won’t go too far on this, but you learn something about a person in these moments.
Mou just laughed it off. On Saturday, notably, he shot 67 and had nine birdies.
“I mean, people know that bunker, and I’m definitely not the first person to be caught in that bunker and make a lot of money, and I certainly won’t be the last,” Mu posted on the PGA Tour’s social media team said in the video. “When things happen, you just have to laugh at it and accept it and then move on and laugh at it. Things happen, man. Golf is a crazy game. Look at the big picture, see things, keep going and catch nine today. Birdie and bounce back in a positive way, that’s what I took it for, and I’m proud of myself.”
We also learn that Mouw knows you’re watching.
In the video, he saw an Instagram comment. The man praised him. The text is as follows.
No club throws, body language the same on every shot, no giving up, and staying focused from 60+ feet to make 2 putts. Thank you @williamouw for setting a positive example for the kids – this kid is going to be a total hottie on tour.
“It means a lot,” Mu says in the video. “Kids look up to you. People look up to you. I have a platform here and I can use it and set an example for the kids – golf is a lot like life, man. Adversity happens and we, as a player, As a student of the game, as a person in life, it’s not about dwelling on adversity, it’s about how to turn adversity into positivity and use it to push yourself to be better and look at the bigger picture. What I did. You know, I’m happy that I have more fans because I’m a person of that era and I’m happy to set an example.
Mouw also wore a bracelet on his right wrist. “Never, never give up,” it read. Inspiring. nice one.
Just like his jokes.
