South Korean investigators are making another attempt to arrest suspended President Yoon Seok-yeol after his failed attempt to impose martial law last month.

The operation, which began shortly after 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday, was South Korea’s anti-corruption investigation office’s second attempt this month to detain Yoon on charges of rebellion and abuse of power.

Investigators initially sought to arrest Yun at Yun’s presidential compound earlier this month after a tense, hours-long standoff, but were thwarted by his protective officers.

Footage broadcast by South Korean television on Wednesday morning appeared to show police scuffling with pro-Yin demonstrators outside the compound where Yoon has been holed up for weeks.

Officials from police and the chief information officer arrived at the compound and presented a warrant for Yoon’s arrest, but were still blocked from entering by presidential security services loyal to him, according to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea’s official news agency.

Yonhap News Agency also reported that about 30 lawmakers from the conservative People’s Power Party led by Yoon Eun-hye were inside the chamber, trying to prevent officials from entering.

Yin’s lawyers insist that the information chief does not have standing to bring criminal rebellion charges against Yin.

They warned last week that police attempts to break into the presidential compound could trigger a “civil war”.

This is a development story.
