On Friday afternoon, ESPN released a short clip of Tiger Woods hitting a ball to the big screen, a reminder of what’s to come in 2025. The TGL season will also kick off (we’re pretty sure). The PGA Tour season will kick off in Hawaii (we’re more confident about that). We will be ready to put our heart and soul into it.
But Woods’ presence is also a reminder that there’s still a little toothpaste left in the golf ball tube in 2024. Go) 72 holes. But this week he will join his son Charlie at the PNC Championship in Orlando, giving us our first glimpse of Woods in action since the Open in July.
But what’s the point of golf until the new year? Here are five golf tournaments to watch before the year is over, starting with Tiger and gradually getting murkier from there.
1. PNC Championship
I solemnly say: this day forward The PNC Championship is one of the best random non-tournament shows in professional golf all year. The Golf Channel team will be making the rounds around the course, picking up delightful gold medals from legends and their children, all putting each other’s presence at ease. Just last year, Lee Trevino spent a few minutes talking about his daily life and Padraig Harrington’s parenting philosophy went in-depth. Come for Tiger and Charlie, stay for everything else. And that’s before the game actually begins!
Once we get started, it’s also a lot of fun, especially if you’re spending the holidays with family – PNC is a great group viewing opportunity. I’m especially excited about the addition of Fred Couples to this year’s lineup, and with Justin and Mike Thomas out, I guess there’s a good chance we’ll be in Woods Couples was seen in the procession…
2. “Showdown”
I should say that the Crypto Internet Showdown will be held at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas on Tuesday, December 17th at 6pm ET. Is this the badass fight everyone dreams of? Sort of like. There’s a lot to love about this matchup: Brooks and Bryson versus Rory and Scottie, four of golf’s biggest names and celebrities going head-to-head. It’s LIV versus the PGA Tour, and the real rivalry has the potential to turn into an exhibition match. It was Tuesday night and there was no football game to watch. These are three six-hole matches, mixed format and ending in singles. It’s December 17th—what else do you have to do?
Of course, maybe there’s an advantage to the whole thing, knowing that all four pros want golf to come together, knowing that McIlroy and Koepka played together at the Grove XXIII Members Championship last week, knowing that there’s more to come The resonance between things among this group is greater than the competition. But competition is also fierce. If there’s one thing these people have in common, it’s that they hate losing. This is a win for us.
3. Mauritius Open
What do I know about this golf tournament? There’s not much more to it than the date (December 19-22) and the fact that it’s the self-proclaimed “golf’s most beautiful week” for defending champion Louis Oosthuizen. epic. If you live outside the United States, or you just get up and look for golf coverage in your spare time, this might be your best option. It’s the last DP World Tour event of the year – but, confusingly, it’s also one of the first events of the season, following last week’s Nedbank Golf Challenge and this weekend’s Alfred The Dunhill Championship concludes with the Global Tour’s first event in southern Africa. What will happen to Mont Choisy Le Golf? Wake up early, tune in and find out.
4. “Warm-up” returns
This is a potential problem since this is my YouTube series, but here we are. Our first season scrimmage resulted in some of my favorite conversations of my career – I conducted range interviews with some super talent, with Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson Deschamps Process and mindset are explored in depth by Bo et al. Who’s next? I’m just alluding to his recent Grand Slam win. At least one. You can subscribe here so you don’t miss out…
One of my favorites from last season, just for reference:

5. Two fascinating documentaries
I don’t know if they’re fascinating because of their actual content, or just because I think their existence is fascinating, that’s it. Maybe they really only appeal to me. However, I am finishing up two team golf documents, and while I’m not ready to give my full endorsement yet, I’m at least interested in what you think of them. There is a documentary on YouTube that tells the story of LIV’s Majesticks, a team co-captained by Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson, as they fight their way from the bottom of the table into the 2024 LIV season. Next week will see the launch of the “Unusual” documentary series, which will follow the construction of TGL Boston, which is expected to encounter various setbacks – the collapse of the dome, the defection of team member Tyrell Hatton, etc. – and the launch of the league. Fun countdown. Do I want both documents to be completed independently, without editorial oversight? Of course, 1000% yes. This might explore some existential questions about what we’re doing here. But we’ll take what we’ve got. It’s already mid-December after all.
