A U.S. resolution calls for a “quick end” in Ukraine, through the UN Security Council through support from Moscow and Beijing, votes in support of Donald Trump’s latest blow to Western unification during his tenure.
France and Britain did not veto the measure, which did not mention Russian aggression or Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but they abstained after the final effort to delay the last vote.
The vote highlights how the Transatlantic Alliance has started working since the end of World War II, as the U.S. president takes a foreign policy approach to dealing with the U.S. president.
This contrasts with the management of Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, who led to Western efforts to retaliate against Russia from its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago in retaliation for the global economy.
This month, Trump held bilateral talks with Moscow, and the European capital blinded this month. In recent days, he also accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of a three-year conflict and called for elections in the country.
Shelby Magid, deputy director of the Atlantic Commission’s European Center, said France, the United Kingdom and other European countries abstained from the vote that the United States and its allies would have to work hard to find common ground.
She added that even if the vote did not mark a complete breakthrough between Washington and Europe, symbolism was evident.
“It’s amazing to see the United States that are the same countries that we point out as the invaders in the same way,” said Marchid.
Earlier Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Trump at the White House and urged him to provide “backup” for European forces that could be deployed to Ukraine’s European forces if a ceasefire was reached .
When asked if European forces would get support from the United States, Trump said: “We will get some kind of support. Obviously, European countries will be involved. I don’t think you need much support.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will also meet in Washington this week to ease tensions with Ukraine and consult on U.S. efforts to end the war.
Trump said on Monday that in another sign of rapid reconciliation between the United States and Russia, he is willing to reach an “economic” deal with state president Vladimir Putin, adding that the two countries are ending When the Ukrainian war was held, “very good negotiations” were held.
Senior U.S. and Russian officials held talks in Riyadh last week on unifying relations and ways to end the Ukrainian war. Kyiv was excluded from the discussion.
The adoption of the U.S. measure at the Security Council marks a shift in the United Nations’ long-standing position on the war. Since 2022, the bodies have supported Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while pointing out Moscow’s aggressiveness.
It also called on Russian troops to withdraw from Ukraine immediately.
Although France, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia have tried to include it, the U.S. final resolution did not include the language of this effect. U.S. officials said they are mainly focused on obtaining measures through the Security Council on Monday.
“This resolution has taken us on the road to peace. This is the first step, but it is crucial that we all be proud of it,” said Dorothy Shea, a representative of the United States. “Now, we have to use it to build a peaceful future for Ukraine, Russia and the international community.”
France’s representative Nicolas de Rivière explained that his abstention decision said: “If the aggression is rewarded, and the jungle law wins, there will be no peace and security anywhere.”
The Russian ambassador to UN Vasily Nebenzya pointed out the “constructive change” in the United States’ position in Ukraine. He said Monday’s resolution “is just a starting point for future efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement.”
Earlier Monday, Ukraine and its European allies passed a resolution at the UN General Assembly that included a condemnation of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Both the United States and Russia voted against it.
