When some players enter the golf course, only certain clubs Know Will be in their bag.
Tiger Woods’ Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putts; Brooks Koepka’s Nike Vapor Fly Pro 3-Iron; and Jordan Spieth’s Scotty Cameron 009 putts.
Or at least the last one is in the past week.
Once unthinkable, Spieth changed putters at the WM Phoenix Open last week, and his 009 brought its back seat to a similarly shaped TP Mills Trad II forged. Spieth’s first putter switch in nearly eight years led to a T4 record, his best on the PGA Tour in 399 days.
In fact, the swap has been over a year.
Many shifters will consider TP Mills a classic brand, known for the likes of Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and Phil Mickelson. But today, TP Mills don’t have much presence on the PGA Tour.

Mills said Spieth’s putter was actually about one year old. Dallas club builder Frank Hartwick contacted Mills early last year on behalf of Spieth and asked for putts for the three-time Grand Slam champion.

“He said Jordan knew who we were and respected the product,” Mills said. “Frank didn’t have a lot of information, I just said, ‘What is the weight of the ground?'”
The final version is a 353g head weight of hand forged 1040 carbon steel with a 70-degree lie angle, a 3-degree loft and a 34.5-inch length.
“My mechanism is the way I can sit on the ground, unlike many milled putters,” Mills said. “I won’t say exactly what I wanted to make it work because that would be difficult.”
Spieth thanked Hartwick for his performance after Mills sent a putt, but Mills didn’t hear much else after that, and Spieth (Spieth) never competed last season.
Until this fall, Spieth recovered from wrist surgery, like many golf nerds, his basement golf club favorites were stuck in his basement when they were unable to shoot full shots due to injuries. .
Spies was so impressed by the stability of the factory that he contacted Mills and wanted to talk more about putting.
Mills would not disclose what the two discussed, but called it a “good visit.”

Spieth didn’t let putters work during his season debut at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he lost over a tenth of the field on the Greens with a T69.
By the time he arrived at TPC Scottsdale, he was lying on his schoolbag with a few putts during his Wednesday practice, but the only wand he saw was Trad for of for ii.
He pulled the trigger of a new flat stick in the first round Thursday and shot 68, but didn’t seem so confident about it.
“I had some options, just the way I tried to put it on the ground, there was a little mess in the draft at the bottom of the putter, and see if I could put it in a better position to set it up and then put the ball down. It was a little smoother,” Spies said after Thursday’s round. “I may use some options this week. I may stick to what I did today. We’ll see.”
Spieth stuck to the Mill all week, ending up finishing T4 and earning over 10-nine shots, ranking 12th in the field.
After the final round, there was no question about putters if they would find a permanent home in his bag, but if we knew nothing about Spieth, the table wasn’t there.
