Braves sign Chasen Shreve to minor league deal

Braves agree to terms with left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post , it’s a minor league deal. The CAA client will enter training camp as a non-roster invitee and will lock in a base salary of $1.3MM if he makes the major league roster.
Shreve is a former Atlanta rookie who made 15 appearances for the club in 2014 and appeared in one MLB game last season as a member of the Rockies. He pitched a scoreless inning. This extends the left-handed veteran’s streak of 11 consecutive major league appearances. Shreve spent most of his 23rd season in the major leagues. He made 50 total appearances between the Tigers and Reds, posting a 4.63 ERA in 44 2/3 games.
While Shreve played in the majors at Colorado, he pitched for three 3A affiliate teams last year. He played with the Rangers, Yankees and Rockers. Shreve accumulated a 2.62 ERA in 34 1/3 innings at the top minor league level. He fanned 26.7% of his opponents and had a slightly better-than-average walk rate of 9.2%. His swing shooting percentage is nearly 14%.
The results were good, but Shreve didn’t have the speed that teams like to stock up on in the bullpen. His fastball averaged 90 mph in Triple-A last season. During his only major league appearance, he averaged 89.4 mph. He often leaned on sliders and beamsplitters to compensate for fringe speed. Shreve has been in the neutral platoon split throughout his career, so he’s not a good fit for left-handed specialty work.
Not a problem for Atlanta Aaron Bammer and Dylan Lee In the last few innings. Angel Perdomo There are no options and need to remain on the MLB roster or be available to other teams. Depends on if they carry Perdomo and keep Rule 5 picks Anderson PilarAtlanta will likely have two or three middle reliever spots up for grabs in training camp.
