Yogurt has unexpected benefits: preventing cancer

Eating yogurt not only provides delicious breakfast or snacks, but also prevents colon cancer, a new study published on February 12 said.

In the study published in the journal Gut Biome, doctors and scientists from Volkswagen Brigham Young examined two studies, more than 150,000 people, who were at least 30 years of research.

“We hypothesized that long-term yogurt intake may be associated with colorectal cancer incidence on tumor subgroup differences based on the number of bifidobacterium tissue,” the study said.

Bifidobacterium is a bacteria commonly found in yogurt.

The study found that those who ate yogurt at least twice a week had “a lower incidence of Bifidobacterium-positive proximal colon cancer”, and those who ate once a month or less than those who ate once a month.

“Our findings suggest that yogurt intake may have a cancer-preventive effect on colorectal cancer and disrupt the intestinal barrier,” the study said.

One of the co-trainings for the study told Fox News Digital that Dr. Tomotaka Ugai was not surprised by the results. Ugai is a lecturer at Harvard Medical School and a faculty member of the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Cancer Epidemiology Program.

“Based on this and other studies, yogurt can be considered health-benefits, including reducing the risk of colorectal cancer subtypes,” he said.

While eating yogurt may be beneficial to prevent colon cancer, a person should not feel like they should force themselves to eat it if they don’t like it.

“If you’re not interested or like yogurt, don’t worry,” he said. “You don’t need it. There are many other healthy dietary options like vegetables, fruits, etc. that you can choose from.”

Ugai told Fox News the numbers, but it’s hard to say whether any product has a similar effect on the gut microbiome, like yogurt.

He said a 2017 study linked a “diet rich in whole grains and dietary fiber” to a decrease in colon tumors.

So if a person really doesn’t like yogurt, they “can eat healthy foods like whole grains and dietary fiber,” he said.
