Farm Show Snow: What to expect on Monday
We’ve done it again! Every year, we seem to find another opportunity for snow during the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Snow showers blanket many areas of the Midstate on Friday, but the main event is next Monday. While we don’t hit the bull’s-eye this time, we still have a chance of a few inches in most places and what will be the heaviest snowfall of the season for most.
The low pressure center of the storm in question will move across Virginia and North Carolina. The center of the system is so far south, meaning central areas won’t see the heaviest snowfall, but will be affected by the northern edge of the snow belt. That’s not to say there won’t be heavy snowfall in some areas. Particularly close to the Maryland border, places like Gettysburg and Chambersburg could see more than an inch of snow per hour on Monday.
Timing-wise, we’ll see steady snowfall at sunrise, continuing throughout the day, then tapering off in the evening. It’s important to keep an eye on your radar in the morning when planning your commute. Temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the day, so accumulation on roadways and bridges will not be difficult. Given that this is our first plowable snow of the season, you should allocate extra time for your trip.
Since snowfall is heaviest south of the Mason-Dixon Line, the winter cold gets less and less the further north we go. Areas closest to the Maryland border could see 3-6 inches of snow, while some mountainous areas could see more than that. Snowfall amounts north of the turnpike ranged from 1 to 3 inches. If the orbit of our system wobbles just a little, the totals will change. We will continue to give you updates on what to expect throughout the weekend. This is not a system to panic about, but one to watch out for on Monday!
