Indiana State Police looking for man accused of shooting Orange County deputy in New Albany
Indiana State Police and local law enforcement surrounded a location in downtown New Albany late Friday night after receiving a tip that a man wanted in connection with the shooting death of an Orange County deputy might be in the area.
In a news release, ISP spokesman Kevin Getz said law enforcement received information that Austin Schepers, 33, of Jasper, Indiana, may be at a location in the 1800 block of East Market Street Inside the residence. Scheppers was a person of interest in the shooting of Deputy Zach Andry earlier in the day.
Gates said police were not sure whether Schepers was at the residence, but officials had requested a search warrant and hoped to peacefully remove the man from the residence if he was there.
“We can’t confirm or deny whether he was in the house, but we certainly need to act as if he was in the house,” Gates said. “Our goal is to end this peacefully. We don’t want to see anyone else get hurt or hurt. ”

What happened in the shooting of an Orange County deputy?
According to the Indy Star, Andy was driving near the intersection of U.S. 150 and Indiana 56 on Friday morning when he saw what he thought was a broken down vehicle with two people inside.
Gates said Andry stopped and approached the vehicle and asked the occupants to get out. A short time later, Schepers allegedly shot the deputy before leaving the scene. A woman was also in the car at the time of the shooting.
Andry was taken to UCL Health in downtown Louisville for treatment and his condition is unknown. Gates said that while a fund has been set up to help Andry and his family, he could not provide further details.
After the shooting, officials issued a Blue Alert, which the Indiana Law Enforcement Department uses to warn people if an officer is in danger, killed or seriously injured. Scheppers’ vehicle was reportedly found late Friday morning in Orangeville, Indiana.
Police described Schepers as a man, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He has a cross tattoo under his left eye and multiple tattoos on his neck.
Gaetz urged people to remember that while the search in New Albany is ongoing, Schepers is still considered armed and dangerous.
“Don’t approach him,” Gates said. “Our primary focus is to ensure that this situation is brought to an end and that all citizens are kept safe.”
