Video shows 7 tons of cocaine found underground on farm
Spanish authorities said on Monday they had seized seven tons of cocaine in shipping containers buried beneath a farm and arrested three smuggling suspects. Police released video of the drug seizure, showing officers digging into the ground and retrieving dozens of packages containing suspected drugs.
Civil Guard police said they launched the operation after spotting two suspicious speedboats at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River on Friday.
The boats were traced to a rural estate in Coria del Río, south of Seville, where the suspects stored the drugs in two containers hidden underground.
The Civil Guard said it was the largest seizure of cocaine smuggled into southern Spain by speedboat and posted video on social media showing police discovering the suspected drugs.
They said they seized three weapons, including an AK-47 assault rifle and two stolen vehicles.
Spain is one of the main gateways into Europe for international drug traffickers because of its proximity to Morocco, the largest cannabis producer, and its close ties with former Latin American colonies.
Last month, Spanish authorities arrested a senior police officer as part of an investigation after they discovered a 20 million euro cache hidden in his home. The country’s largest ever cocaine seizure.
