Death in Paradise is bringing back Danny John-Jules to the series. Returning as fan favourite character Officer Dwayne Myers, he has not been seen in the BBC show for some time. But why is he making an appearance now?
Why is Danny John Jules returning to Death in Paradise?
Since premiering back in 2011, Death in Paradise has seen many beloved characters come and go over the years.
With 10 years behind it, Officer Dwayne Myers proved to be one of the most important characters throughout the series.
The BBC has just announced that he is making a return to the show since departing the series during the show’s seventh season in 2018.
In a welcome surprise for fans, the star will return during a 90-minute special episode, set to premiere this Christmas.
This will not just be a standalone episode, with the special addressing the cliffhanger left at the end of season 10.
Season 10 concluded with Neville confessing his feelings for Florence, but fans didn’t get to find out Florence’s response.
During the episode, Dwayne Myers will team up with Neville Parker (Ralf Little) and Florence Cassell (Joséphine Jobert) to solve a new murder case.
John-Jules made a statement with the announcement, sharing “it’s always a pleasure going back to the Caribbean.”
The star continued: “After four years away, fitting back into the fold should be seamless as I know all the new leading cast members already.
“I look forward to bringing Dwayne and this tenth anniversary special script to life.”
John-Jules has clearly always loved starring in the role, as he only originally left because of a scheduling conflict.
Outside of Death in Paradise, the star is best known for playing the role of Cat in the long-running science-fiction series Red Dwarf.
Back in 2018, he was offered the chance to reprise his role as the cult-favourite character, which was an offer he couldn’t refuse.
A year after leaving the role, the star spoke to Express.co.uk, explaining: “It was one of the greatest roles that I’ve had. [To] have another show that was as successful as that, I couldn’t ask for anything more.
“But the draw to Red Dwarf is more powerful than the draw for Death in Paradise. It’s like going home. “
The scheduling conflict has now ended, with Red Dwarf once again coming to a close in 2020.
This left the star free to return, but it looks as though he is only coming back for the Christmas Special.
Any news on whether or not the star will reprise his role for the long haul is yet to be seen, with an update from the BBC likely to come nearer the special’s release.
Since leaving Death in Paradise in 2018, outside of returning to Red Dwarf, the star appeared in two other projects.
The first was Robozuna in 2018, with the other project being Creation Stories, a biographical drama about Creation Records head, Alan McGee.
The news of John-Jules’ return has been well-received by fans, with viewers rushing to Twitter to share their excitement for the star’s arrival on the special episode.
One fan said: “I so miss him on that show (no offence to the others).”
“Oh yeah!!! So happy with this,” another added.
A third commented: “So happy!! My favourite character is coming back! Hopefully for the duration…”
Death in Paradise is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
