Clinton was asked to explain her comment this morning on “The View.”
Hillary Clinton is opening up about the fallout from her husband Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky and why she decided to stick by him instead of kicking him to the curb when the scandal broke.
While she and daughter Chelsea Clinton were promoting their book, "The Book of Gutsy Women," on "Good Morning America" this week, Hillary was asked to name the "gutsiest" thing she’s ever done. "Personally, make the decision to stay in my marriage," she said at the time, without elaborating further.
This morning on "The View," the hosts pushed her on that a little more, as she expanded on the topic.
"I think everybody knows it was an incredibly painful time and experience for us and I’ve lived long enough that I’ve had lots of friends go through similar experiences, but not on a world’s stage," she replied.
"You’d be in a kitchen, holding each other’s hands or on the telephone listening to your friend cry and trying to figure out what’s the right thing to do and there’s no one answer," she continued, as daughter Chelsea sat beside her.
"For some people I’ve known, the right thing was take your kids and go, clean out your bank accounts, don’t look back," said Clinton. "For other people, get into a negotiation and figure out whether you want to stay. Or in my case, after hard, hard thinking about it, counseling, praying, all the things I did and we went through I just decided it was the right decision for me."
She said it was not an easy decision, but a "really hard one" for her at the time.
"When the question was asked, personally, everybody faces a moment of decision and you have to reach deep, down inside and decide what’s right for you to do," added Clinton. "Hopefully, it’s reached with love and understanding and it’s gutsy and that’s what I had to do."
In 2018, Hillary told CBS she didn’t consider her husband’s affair with his then-intern an abuse of power, saying Lewinsky "was an adult" when it transpired. Speaking about her comments on "The View," the cohosts all took her to task on them at the time, though Lewinsky was not mentioned by name during today’s interview.
Lewinsky opened up like never before about her side of the scandal in 2018 on the A&E special "The Clinton Affair," see TooFab’s full breakdown of the six-part series below. She’s also producing the next season of "American Crime Story," which will focus on Clinton’s impeachment and air in 2020.
