What do you want to be known for on earth? Disney and Pixar’s Soul takes passion to a new level, complete with glowing green “souls” and plenty of jazz music. How is this movie different from Inside Out, which talked about what goes on in a person’s head? Here’s or comparison of the two Disney and Pixar animated films.
Pixar’s latest movie, ‘Soul,’ follows musician Joe Gardner
With Onward recently released in theaters and headed for its Disney+ debut, the Pixar animation studio has one more movie up its sleeve for 2020. That’s Soul, an animated film, slated for a June 2020 release.
The story follows musician and teacher Joe Gardner, who’s life gets turned upside down after falling in a manhole. He wakes up as a green figure with a new purpose: finding his life’s greatest purpose. Jamie Foxx voices the main character, while Tina Fey portrays another lovable soul, named 22.
Not much else is known about the story for this upcoming Pixar movie, though some fans suspect it will feature plenty of jazz music, jokes from Tina Fey, and another heartwarming message about self-discovery.
“Like Inside Out, we’re taking you to a world where no one’s ever been — well, for a long time,” producer Dana Murray said during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Some fans noticed similarities between ‘Soul’ and ‘Inside Out’
There isn’t just one aspect that makes a person who they are, and Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out explores that idea. The story, instead of featuring one “soul,” follows characters Joy, Disgust, Anger, Fear, and Sadness. According to Pixar’s animated film, these are the emotions that helped make a person who they are, even having the Islands of Personality. Sound familiar?
Other fans noticed similarities between Soul and Coco, Disney and Pixar’s 2017 release, which follows one music fan on his journey to the land of the dead. Kemp Powers reassured viewers, however, this upcoming film is unlike anything fans have seen before.
“We went in a completely different direction than any of the other films that [Inside Out Director Pete Doctor’s] done,” writer and co-director Kemp Powers said. “It’s hard to contain our enthusiasm over how much people are going to be surprised by what they see.”
When does ‘Soul’ premiere in theaters?
It’s almost time for fans to travel to this new world with Joe Gardner. However, the details surrounding the Soul premiere in theaters are still pretty foggy. Soul was originally slated for a June 2020 premiere. Unfortunately, that date may be pushed back, due to the coronavirus surge and growing concerns about public safety.
Disney already postponed release dates of movies Mulan and Black Widow. Presumably, more information about Soul will be announced in the coming weeks. In the meantime, fans can watch recently-released Pixar movies like Toy Story 4, Finding Dory, and Coco on Disney’s streaming platform, titled Disney+.
As of March 24, Disney and Pixar’s Soul will premiere in theaters on June 19, 2020.
