Coronation Street fans may soon see Brenda Blethyn join the cast of the hit ITV soap. The Vera actress recently confessed to being a regular viewer of Corrie and suggested she’d love to join the cast. As a result, one Coronation Street cast member has teased which role would be a good match for Brenda on the soap.
Brenda recently reappeared on-screen with a new series of ITV’s hit crime drama Vera.
She returned as DCI Vera Stanhope for two episodes which saw her attempt to solve more mysterious murder cases.
However, the actress has now revealed she’d also like to turn her hand to soaps as she admitted to being a big fan of Coronation Street.
In a recent interview, Brenda opened up about her love of the popular long-running ITV show.
“I’d love to be part of the Platt family or part of Abi the mechanic’s family. I think she’s terrific,” she told TVTimes magazine.
In response to the actress’s comment, Coronation Street star Sally Carman confessed she’d love Brenda to join the cast.
Sally, who plays Abi Franklin on the soap, recently chatted about the potential casting with Express.co.uk and other press.
When asked who she thought Brenda could play on the soap, Sally replied: “I think she could play my mother.
“Yeah, I would have done all that, oh my goodness. Yeah, Brenda is awesome,” she added.
The soap star went on to detail how she’s previously worked with Brenda’s Vera co-star Kenny Doughty and noted he’s also a Corrie fan.
Sally said: “Kenny, who is her sidekick on Vera, I worked with him on a show a few years back and he’s just brilliant.
“So, we’re friends but, you know, because he’s a big supporter of Corrie.
“He watches it all the time and I know Brenda does as well so for her to say that it’s just like ‘What?’ you know, my goodness,” she remarked.
Sally’s character Abi has been through a lot of heartbreak this year, following the death of her son Seb (played by Harry Visinoni).
Last week, viewers saw Seb’s killer Corey Brent (Maximus Evans) on trial for his murder.
However, the trial came to a devastating conclusion on Friday night when Cory was found not guilty.
As a result, Abi may need the support of family to help her get through this distressing ordeal.
Could Abi’s mum soon arrive on the cobbles to help her daughter? And could she really be played by Brenda?
Abi is already set to get a blast from the past in upcoming scenes on Coronation Street, as Seb’s father is due to arrive.
Sally recently confirmed ex-EastEnders actor Stephen Lord had been cast in the role of Seb’s father.
Speaking about the upcoming scenes, Sally revealed: “It was good because the audience are left with no doubt that Abi doesn’t like him and has no time for him, but she simply knows he can help her with something that isn’t emotional.
“In the scenes that I have done so far, he’s trying to worm his way in and she’s like, ‘Do one.’
“I love when Corrie starts bringing different characters in, it’s awesome. It pads out Abi even more, and I love it,” the actress added.
Coronation Street continues Wednesday at 7:30pm on ITV.
