The Social Dilemma is on Netflix now and the docu-drama follows social media experts as they explain how social networking has affected our lives. Part of the series includes fictional characters in made-up scenarios, yet it also includes insightful interviews from some real-life experts. Who is in the cast of The Social Dilemma?
Tristan Harris, 35, stars as himself in the series and he studied computer science, with a focus on human interaction.
The expert, from San Fransisco, has also worked at Apple and Google, and he created a startup company called Apture.
While he was at Google he worked as a Design Ethicist and studied how social media impacts user behaviour as well as general wellbeing.
Aza Raskin, 36, helped to launch the Center for Humane Technology as well as the Earth Species Project.
The Center reaches out to technology companies and encourages them to avoid certain social media features and profit incentives.
His quirkier project the Earth Species Project focuses on decoding animal communication.
Justin Rosenstein is a 37-year-old software programmer who co-founded the software company Asana.
He has a degree in maths and joined Google as a product manager in 2004.
In 2007 he joined Facebook as an engineering lead and worked closely with Mark Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz.
He helped create the Facebook Like button as well as Facebook Beacon.
Shoshana Zuboff is an author and professor at Harvard University, specialising in the digital revolution.
She has a Ph.D in social psychology as well as a BA in philosophy, and she explored a new market form called ‘surveillance capitalism’.
Jaron Lanier is a computer scientist who is known for writing about computer philosophy.
He is thought to be one of the original founders of the concept of virtual reality, and he helped found VPL Research in 1985. This company was the first to sell VR goggles to the public.
He has also worked for Microsoft and in 2010 he featured in the list of 100 most influential people in TIME.
Tim Kendall used to be Director of Monetization at Facebook and he is the former president of Pinterest.
He has since left the social media industry and is an advocate for spending less time communicating through technology.
He began experimenting with screen time and made the choice to reduce his social media usage, deleting Facebook altogether.
Rashida Richardson is director of policy research at the company AI Now and she has led work on privacy and surveillance.
She has previously worked at Facebook and she has qualifications in law and has contributed to The Social Dilemma giving insight into the complications of artificial intelligence.
Renée DiResta works as the technical research manager at Stanford Internet Observatory.
She is an expert in the field of abuse in information technology and she investigates the spread of “malign narratives across social networks”, according to her website.
She investigates propaganda in “pseudoscience conspiracies, terrorist activity, and state-sponsored information warfare”.
Anna Lembke is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University Medical Center.
She specialises in addiction disorders, anxiety, and psychotherapy and The Social Dilemma documentary looks at how such conditions and disorders are influenced by social media.

Ben – Skyler Gisondo
There are some fictional characters in the documentary, which includes elements of drama to help explain the impacts of social media.
Skyler Gisondo plays Ben, one of the characters who helps explain how social media algorithms influence and sometimes manipulate individuals.
Gisondo is a 24-year-old American actor who has starred in the TV series Santa Clarita Diet and the film Vacation.
Cassandra – Kara Hayward
Cassandra is the eldest of her siblings and she has concerns about the wider issues surrounding the risk of addiction to social media.
She is a fictional character who is played by Kara Hayward, a 21-year-old American actress known for her roles in Moonrise Kingdom and To the Stars.
A.I. – Vincent Kartheiser
In The Social Dilemma AI (Artificial Intelligence) manages Ben’s feeds and influences him to click on more content.
Ben’s addiction means he stops attending soccer practice and he isolates himself from his friends.
The three voices of AI are all by Vincent Kartheiser, a 41-year-old American actor known for his role as Pete Campbell in AMC’s Mad Men.
Isla – Sophia Hammons
Isla is another teenage fictional character in the documentary and viewers get to see through her eyes how social media impacts mental health and self-esteem in young people.
Isla is played by Sophia Hammons, who has also starred in Keyhole Garden and Extra Ordinary.
Other fictional characters include Cataline Garayoa as Rebecca, Barbara Gehring as Mom and Chris Grundy as step-dad.
The characters have grabbed the attention of viewers who have said the piece is more harrowing than any horror film in terms of its stark message.
