The first season of The Rookie’s brand new spin-off, The Rookie: Feds, introduced fans to a brand new team headed up by Special Agent Simone Clark (played by Niecy Nash-Betts) and her boss, Matt Garza (Felix Solis). However, the fate of ABC’s favourite FBI task force could be in jeopardy after the team leader is somehow taken in under some serious charges.

Garza’s arrest could already mean the end of the Los Angeles Special Investigative Unit just halfway through The Rookie: Feds’ first season.

The series follows former guidance counsellor Simone who finally achieves her dream of signing up with the FBI at the age of 48.

As the oldest rookie in the academy, she is assigned to Agent Garza’s unit following a chance encounter with John Nolan (Nathan Fillion).

Unfortunately, just half a season later, the team is already at risk after a shocking arrest convinces Garza someone is targeting his agents.

A synopsis for the next episode, Flashbacks, reads: “When Garza’s character comes into question, Simone and team develop their own covert operation to support their boss.”

At the start of the promo for next week’s midseason finale, Garza is ambushed by a group of fellow FBI agents and informed he’s under arrest for espionage.

Garza does go quietly, but the team immediately realise something doesn’t add up.

“He was busted with two million in cash and forged passports,” Agent Laura Stensen (Britt Robertson) explains.

The senior agent obviously denies the charges, and it seems someone is out to take down Garza’s agents one by one, starting with the boss himself.

One of their enemies may have planted the fake evidence on Garza, leading to his inevitable yet temporary arrest and leaving the team vulnerable.

Although he could be facing life behind bars – or worse – the team will stop at nothing to disprove the charges and ensure his freedom.

Garza’s own boss Tracy Chiles (Courtney Ford) informs Simone: “What he’s accused of carries the death sentence.”

If the case isn’t resolved in time, Garza could be the first major casualty of the season, bringing Simone’s newfound team to its knees after just a few months on the job.

Later, Garza insists: “Someone is trying to set me up. Our side is compromised.”

Evidently, the latest threats against the unit won’t stop at Garza, as he maintains the entire team could be in grave danger.

More footage from the episode teases an action-packed finale to ring in the series’ midseason break before Simone lays down an ultimatum.

“We cannot let the boss down,” she says. “This is a matter of life or death.”

However, keeping the boss safe won’t be easy, and the final shot of the teaser sees Garza caught in a huge explosion from a lobbed grenade.

Simone always knew her life as an FBI agent wouldn’t be easier, but next week’s hour of The Rookie: Feds will truly put her to the test.

The Rookie: Feds continues Tuesdays on ABC in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
