On Monday, the One Show returned to screens with presenters Jermaine Jenas and Lauren Laverne. However, as they welcomed climate activist Greta Thunberg, many viewers took to social media with fury.

The 19-year-old Swedish activist joined the One Show to discuss her new book, The Climate Book, an essential handbook which is also authored by geophysicists, oceanographers and meteorologists.

Greta opened up about her early days of campaigning, which started at home with her parents.

She shared: “When your like 8, there’s not much you can do to make a big difference, so then you start small.

“I started with turning off the lights at home to save energy and that led to other things, which led to another thing and eventually I stopped flying, I became vegan and got my parents to do that too.“

Greta continued: “I started talking to them and they started listening to my concerns.

“By making them change, it also gave me the sort of courage I needed move to start school striking.

“So starting somewhere is really good, starting at home for example.”

However, as the activist continued to offer advice viewers took to Twitter with fury and threatened to switch off.

@GerryNeill6 tweeted: “Does Greta Thunberg not realise Putin is gonna blow the whole world up? We are all f****d either way.”

@suzysasha added: “Oh no,Greta is on, time to switch off!”

An angered @scottm_IT wrote: “Brainwashed Greta trying to successfully brainwash #TheOneShow viewers.”

@Bentleyblackjak asked: “Why ain’t she in Brazil…saving the rainforests? Genuine question.”

Despite the negative reaction, Greta also received many positive comments from viewers who were pleased to see her on the One Show raising awareness.

Taking to Twitter @beginningwithm shared: “Greta Thunberg is really impressive. The amount of hate thrown at her and yet she just dusts it off and continues to fight for what she knows is right.”

@Cogs39 stated: “I can see why young people find @GretaThunberg so inspirational. It is their future she is fighting for. Hope her 30+ hour train journey home isn’t too torturous!” (sic)

Later on, in the show, Sir Tony Robinson was welcomed on the show with his rescue dog Holly Berry.

Tony also took the time to praise Greta for her work, he said: “Greta that book is fantastic.”

Turning to the presenters, he joked: “Hyping up someone else’s book on a show like this is ridiculous.

“Honestly if people are just going to read one book out of the next five years, I think they should read Greta’s book.”

He added: “It’s intelligent, it’s entertaining, it’s really interesting but it says things like, ‘You’ll probably get really bored talking about the environmental crisis sometimes, but that’s understandable’… at the end of the day you come out knowing so much more, so good on you.”

The One Show continues weekdays on BBC One from 7pm
