BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker has revealed he signed up to Strictly Come Dancing after his kids sat him down and told him he had to take part if he ever had the chance.

The dad-of-three said he felt he had no choice when his children, daughters Susanna and Jessica and son Chuck, said they’d love to see him take to the famous dance floor.

The 44-year-old presenter explained: “I’ve got three kids who are 14, 12 and 10 and they sat me down at Christmas and said, ‘Dad, if you ever get asked again, we’d love for you to do it.”

Dan continued that it’s very rare that they’re interested in what he does on screen, having only asked him to do two shows in his entire career.

He said: “I’ve got two daughters who are very much into dancing, Strictly and all that sort of stuff.”

“I’ve done a lot of telly that I’ve wanted to do for a long time and, anyone that’s got kids of that age will know, it’s rare to do something that your kids are fully invested in.”

Dan added: “They’ve only ever asked me to do two programmes – Saturday Mash Up and this. I did Saturday Mash Up in the summer – and here we are on Strictly.”

However, the TV star revealed he nearly slipped up and almost ruined the surprise for them before it was officially announced.

Dan confessed with a laugh: “I nearly gave the game away because we all share a YouTube account at home.”

“The kids were looking up something on YouTube and the last thing that they saw was: ‘How to Charleston for beginners.’”

“So my eldest daughter said, ‘err, Dad, is there something you want to tell us?’ but that was a few months ago.”

Continuing to say that he told “hardly anybody” Dan added: “Obviously I talked it through with my wife Sarah and that was back when the first conversations were happening.”

“I didn’t even tell the kids until the weekend before the Tuesday that I was announced.”

Now, Dan is ready and raring to go and hopes he’ll be able to impress not only his family, but the all-star judges and viewers at home.

He said: “Everyone just assumes, probably quite rightly, that a tall bloke can’t jive or move quickly and in time.”

“I've been reliably informed that I've got some element of rhythm, so that's a start!”
