Alex Jones and The One Show’s newest addition Carl Hutchinson were joined by Strictly Come Dancing contestant JJ Chalmers on today’s instalment of the BBC magazine show. However, when JJ was teased about his friendship with Prince Harry, the presenter opened up on the Duke of Sussex’s reaction to him taking to the dance floor.

During his career as a Royal Marine Commando, JJ suffered life-changing injuries following an IED explosion in Afghanistan.

JJ went on to compete in the 2014 Invictus Games where he met Prince Harry and discovered a passion for broadcasting.

Carl asked: “Now I know you’re friends with Prince Harry, has he been in touch? Has he given you any pointers, has he wished you well?”

JJ replied: “Yeah so I’ve heard back from him and like all my friends from the military he just thinks first and foremost it’s absolutely ridiculous of course and it’s hilarious.

“But at the same time, and Alex knows this, the Invictus Games was founded to give opportunities.

“Not just for us to recover physically which this is, a physical test but to have a life beyond injury, beyond recovery.

“So he’s incredibly proud of anybody that goes on to succeed in whatever chosen field they’re in and this is a progression within my career and he’ll be looking on with pride.”

Alex quipped: “Wouldn’t it be great to see Harry and Meghan in the audience?

“That would be brilliant. Who knows? JJ you can make it happen.”

Carl went on to quiz JJ on who he thinks is his biggest competition on the Strictly dance floor.

JJ answered: “Oh it’s really tricky to pick everyone apart. It doesn’t matter what your level of experience is.

“First of all, you’re working with these amazing instructors so you really can go from zero to hero.

“It’s so much more than a dance competition, you’re trying to win the crowd over by embracing the showmanship of it all.

“Both ends of the spectrum whether it’s the young’uns like Maisie and HRVY or the old and bold like Bill Bailey, they all know how to put on a show.”

Alex added: “I think there’s some really good contestants. There are every year but this year I can’t even choose a top five at the minute.”

“Well, would you put me in it? That’s all I need to know,” JJ joked.

Teasing the Strictly experience, he continued: “We’ve been pretending to be dancers so far.

“There’s been photoshoots, there’s been costumes, glitz, glamour.

“But last week we actually got to find out whether we are dancers or not and I’ve been dancing ergo I must be a dancer.

“How good I am we’re yet to see but once you get in that Strictly ballroom you just cannot help but embrace it all because you suddenly realise with the lights, camera, glitz, glamour you can’t play it too much.”

The One Show airs weekdays on BBC One at 7pm. Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One on Saturday at 7.50pm.
