New series of Mrs Brown’s Boys heading to BBC despite lowest ever ratings

Oh mammy! A new series of Mrs Brown’s Boys is in the works.

For the past decade, the show has only aired specials over the festive period.

But now a new run of four episodes is due to be made after a string of delays.

The cast will be reuniting this spring to film the series and it will air later this year on BBC One.

Show boss Brendan O’Carroll, 67, said: “This mini-series was actually planned for 2021. Having been thwarted twice, firstly by Covid-19 and then by a post Covid shortage of studios, it’s fantastic to, at last, have the chance to make it happen.

“Fasten your seatbelts and hold onto your hats!”

Beeb chiefs are convinced the series will be a big hit with fans.

In a statement its Head of Comedy Josh Cole and exec producer Steve Canny said: “There’s no one quite like Mrs. Brown.

“An absolute force of outrageous wit and slapstick that has audiences hooked and belly laughing. It’s great to be back.”

And the BBC’s Director of Comedy John Petrie said: “Millions of viewers around the UK will be thrilled to hear that Brendan is bringing Agnes and the family back together for a brand-new mini-series of his award-winning show.”

Mrs Brown’s Boys launched in 2011 and quickly became one of TV’s biggest shows.

But in 2021 it suffered its lowest ratings ever for a Halloween special when less than three million fans tuned in.

On New Year's Day the show was hit with fresh backlash as it aired its usual festive special as fans who watched the 30-minute episode at home said it had "lost its way".

The special episode, titled Mammy’s Hair Loom, was one of four to be shown in 2023 and saw the once loved fictional character navigate life in Finglas for the second time in a couple of days.

Only 2.4million tuned in to BBC One to watch the show's Christmas episode, titled Shining Mammy, with viewers claiming it's now “unwatchable”.

The last full series of Mrs Brown's Boys aired in 2013 but since then it has returned for a number of festive specials.
