MCU Rumor: Is Spider-Man Really About to Become an Avengers Villain?

Rumors are swirling about how Spider-Man’s story will play out on screen. Following a 2019 deal between Marvel and Sony, fans expect an increased presence for Spider-Man (Tom Holland) in Phase 4. But so far, Marvel Studios has not confirmed how the Marvel Cinematic Universe will build on Spider-Man: Far From Home. What if Spidey’s arc takes a dark turn though?

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ ends with a personal bombshell for Peter

After two films lulling moviegoers into what its Spider-Man would be like, the MCU spun a tricky web in Spider-Man: Far From Home. That 2019 release ends with J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) announcing to the world that Peter Parker is, in fact, Spider-Man. Notably, he is the only major MCU hero to still have a secret identity to fall back on.

As fans might guess, that will leave Spidey with a huge mess to clear up in his next appearance. No one knows yet if the MCU will stick to this reveal or retcon it out of existence following the next Spider-Man movie. After all, time travel and alternate dimensions are already in play. But before any of that happens, Peter must deal with the immediate consequences.

The 2021 sequel will likely see Spidey on the run from the law

According to a new report, Spidey is going to be in such hot water that he will have an Avenger on his tail. The wallcrawler joined Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But his alleged murder of Quentin Beck aka Mysterio (Jake Gyellenhaal) will draw the ire of his fellow heroes.

We Got This Covered reports Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) will be the one looking for Peter, though not in the upcoming Spider-Man 3. Rather Spider-Man and Captain Marvel could face off in another subsequent movie. Ironically, rumors have persisted that Spidey will develop a crush on Captain Marvel, which will fade by the time they actually do battle.

As for Spider-Man 3, the site claims it will likely still introduce Kraven the Hunter as he pursues Spidey. Kraven is probably still a safe bet for an appearance. After all, he is one of a few major Spider-Man villains who has not appeared on screen. The Captain Marvel rumor, however, might not fit with the MCU’s plan, which reportedly may connect Spidey to the X-Men.

But will the MCU really send Captain Marvel after him?

As always, until Marvel Studios makes an official announcement, this report should be firmly classified as a rumor. That being said, Spider-Man and Captain Marvel did have a brief interaction in Avengers: Endgame. Fans could consider that a tease of more in store for that dynamic. Again though, that doesn’t mean Carol Danvers would assume the worst about Peter.

Besides, Spider-Man and Captain Marvel are both top contenders to lead the next Avengers line-up. In all likelihood, the latter will assume command of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Meanwhile, Spidey could be assembling his own team of Young Avengers, rumors indicate. Phase 4 will likely be a wild ride for fans, setting up years of storytelling and potential cross-overs. Strap in.
