Kate Garraway jokes her MBE hasnt made her more competent on Good Morning Britain

Kate Garraway has joked that her MBE has not made her “more competent” as she returned to the studio for Good Morning Britain on Thursday.

It was announced that the presenter had been awarded an MBE by the Queen on the New Year’s Day honours list.

Appearing on the ITV breakfast show, the 54 year old journalist and presenter joked with her co-hosts that the MBE has not changed her.

Susanna Reid began by introducing Kate as: “Lady Garraway, MBE.”

The crew on set then cheered and clapped as Kate said: “Thank you very much indeed, thank you, thank you.”

Susanna, 51, asked: “How are you doing?”

Kate replied: “Well, it hasn’t made me any more competent.”

The duo cheekily broke into laughter, before Kate added: “I laughed when I shouldn’t have done then.”

Ben Shephard added: “You get to stand at the bar now don’t you? Stand to attention.”

Kate responded: “Yes, I do, which I think is wrong, you should have to stand and I should be reclining on a chez long.”

Kate let out another giggle as the two joked: “Like Mariah Carey would.”

The mother of two had already spoken about her mixed feelings about receiving the MBE. When she appeared on the show virtually on Tuesday 4 January, Kate admitted she had some backlash for receiving the title from the Queen.

Kate explained that many viewers assumed that she had received the honour for caring for her husband during his battle with Covid-19, as seen in the documentary Finding Derek.

However, Kate told Susanna and temporary host Richard Bacon that the honour was for her services to broadcasting, journalism and charity.

Kate added: “There've been a few comments since it was announced from people saying, ‘Why has she got this? I look after my loved one.’”

She continued: “You sort of feel like, ‘ooh… I haven't got it for looking after Derek.’ It is for broadcasting and also for charity work.”

Kate went on to admit she even felt “awkward” about being given the honour, especially as “there's lots of people that you feel deserve it more, so it's a strange feeling.”

She added: “I actually feel very awkward about it all really, I don’t know why because I’m thrilled to bits and incredibly honoured, but you just sort of think, ‘what me?!’”

Susanna reassured her co-host by sending her support, she said: “Congratulations Kate. It’s absolutely well deserved. You’ve been a phenomenally important voice for very personal and painful reasons for your family, but it’s terrific that you’ve got that MBE.”
