I'm A Celeb's Vernon Kay says he and Tess Daly have 'moved' on from sexting scandal with Rhian Sugden in 2010

VERNON Kay has insisted that he and Tess Daly have "moved on" from the sexting scandal with Rhian Sugden 10 years ago.

The I'm A Celebrity star was caught sending flirty text messages to Page 3 model Rhian Sugden in 2010 and the scandal left his TV career in tatters.

When asked if there were any misconceptions about him he'd want to put right during his stint on I'm A Celeb when it starts tomorrow night, Vernon was candid about his past.

"There isn't a hidden side to me. I've been on telly for 20 years and my career started on a reality show," he told the Mirror last night.

"All that stuff is in the past, we've forgotten about that, we've moved on. It's all gone. It's disappeared."

Vernon also admitted he hopes his fellow campmates are open-minded so he can talk about the "positive" and "negative" things that have happened in his life.

"I think that's why I'm hoping this camp will be an open forum with no judgement on what people have done in the past and the present and how they've moved on from it," he said.

"Everyone has moved on. All that stuff is in the past."

Vernon, who presented Family Fortunes and Splash in the past, saw his TV career stall after he and Page 3 model Rhian Sugden were involved in a scandal back in 2010.

The father-of-two was forced to apologise for sending flirty text messages to the blonde beauty during a live radio appearance at the time.

Speaking a decade ago, Vernon told listeners he'd made "some foolish and stupid decisions" as he apologised to his family – wife Tess, 51, and their daughters Phoebe, now 15, and 11-year-old Amber.

Earlier this month, the star admitted that lockdown has helped him and Tess, who he has been married to for 16 years, grow closer than ever.

In a rare interview about his private life, Vernon told Humans of XS Manchester podcast: "The positive thing is that it’s enabled us as a family to really get to know each other even better than you would as a family.

"When you think about it when you’re in a relationship, a working relationship, you wake up, you go to work, you get back and you have your dinner, kids doing their homework, you go to bed."

Vernon said before lockdown he might only see his family for four hours on a standard working day.

He continued: “When you’re in lockdown and you’re spending 24/7 with each other it really gives you the chance to really kind of re-connect and get to know each other better, not better, but you really get under the skin of your relationships with your kids and your missus.”

Vernon and Tess have raked in millions in the years since the sexting scandal that threatened to derail their successful careers.

Meanwhile, Rhian broke down in tears last month as she revealed that her job prospects nose-dived.

Talking on TV documentary Page Three: The Naked Truth Rhian revealed her work dried up after the 2010 furore, while Vernon and Tess have suffered no financial impact after his public apology.

They are now estimated to be worth around £4 million.

She said: “He just got away with it. It ruined everything for me. I felt like I was going up and up with my career and then that came along. I wish I’d never met him.

“He got to give an apology on the radio and just got to carry on, with Family Fortunes, ironically. It still makes me feel sick.”
