‘I feel so grateful’: ‘Today’ show anchors get first dose of COVID-19 vaccine on air

New York’s Rockefeller Plaza transformed into an outdoor Walgreens clinic as five “Today” show anchors received vaccines on air.

Savannah Guthrie, Craig Melvin, Sheinelle Jones, Dylan Dreyer and Jenna Bush Hager all got their first shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine during the second hour of NBC’s “Today” show Wednesday. Walgreens pharmacists administered the shots in socially-distanced fashion outsidethe morning show’s studio.

“I feel so grateful,” Guthrie said. “I just think about this is something that has not been done in all of human history, a vaccine in a year. Not just one vaccine, but two, three, four candidates. It’s an incredible feat of science and I love that and we’re so lucky to get to be the beneficiaries of that.”

The show’s anchors vaccination comes after the state extended eligibility to residents 16 years old and older Tuesday.

About 32.6% of people in the U.S. have received at least one COVID-19 shot and about 19% of people are fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The first vaccine dose in the U.S. was administered Dec. 14.

The U.S. currently has more than 30.8 million confirmed coronavirus cases and 556,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The global totals: more than 132 million cases and 2.8 million deaths.

“You know I’m not a man of great emotion, but I’m that close to crying.” Melvin said. “I’m so thankful for the science and the scientists, but I think we should also remember the 560,000 people in this country that we’ve lost in this past year to this dreadful virus.”

The newly vaccinated anchors join “Today” weatherman Al Roker, 66, who has received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, and anchor Hoda Kotb, 56, who revealed on Instagram last month that she received her first dose of the vaccine.

“One down! One to go❤️,” Kotb captioned the March 31 post.
