Kate, 53, was on hand to present the last edition of Good Morning Britain this week, the same day her mother-in-law celebrates her 80th birthday. With husband Derek, 53, remaining in hospital, the broadcaster has been keeping in contact more frequently with his family over the past year. However, the presenter was forced to mark the landmark occasion for her spouse’s mother on-air after forgetting to call her before heading to the ITV studio.

The moment came as the mother-of-two and her co-star Ben Shephard, 46, interviewed singer Rodney Earl Clarke, who will perform the national anthem at this weekend’s Six Nations tournament.

As the chat came to an end, the guest wanted to mark his father’s birthday by sending his and his family’s love to the patriarch.

However, this seemed to jog Kate’s memory as she quickly jumped in to share her own celebratory message to Derek’s mother.

“It’s my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday, today,” the presenter explained as she went on to admit her regret.

“I feel really bad because I haven’t called yet,” she added, having been awake at unsociable hours to host the programme.
