Ex Corrie star says ITV soap was 'a weird one' as he reveals why he quit
Former Coronation Street actor James Burrows has opened up about why he left behind his role as Alex ‘Ali’ Neeson in 2020.
The 31-year-old Eden Lake actor played the character for two years before leaving the show.
James revealed the reasons behind his exit while chatting exclusively to Metro.co.uk about his recent Netflix film Three Day Millionaire, in which he plays larger-than-life Curly Dean.
The Derbyshire-born actor is also starring in the upcoming Apple TV series, Hijack, with Idris Elba.
When quizzed about his former character Ali, James said the soap was ‘a weird one, really’ and confessed ultimately it wasn’t for him, which caused him to turn his back on the role.
‘It just wasn’t really for me personally hence why I left,’ he said, before explaining how he was getting ‘bored of playing the same character’.
Now, the star is promoting the Netflix comedy, directed by Jack Spring, which tells the fictional tale of Grimsby fishermen who attempt to save their threatened industry.
The actor also divulged a shocking story of when he was almost shot on set ‘years and years’ ago.
‘I’m not going to say what job it was on because I don’t want to get anyone into trouble,’ he said.
‘We were rehearsing and rehearsing this scene,’ he began, before describing how ‘one of the actors’ had a gun ‘right in my face, right in my eye’.
James then described how the actor ‘wasn’t supposed to pull the trigger’ but he was ‘getting into character so much’ he did so ‘quite a lot’ during rehearsals.
The Mount Pleasant actor continued: ‘And what had happened was, we were in between a rehearsal and the armorer turned around and normally shows everyone on set, “Look it’s a blank magazine,” or whatever, and he pulled the trigger – 1, 2, 3 – and on the fourth click, it went bang.’
‘It was a blank,’ explained James, which he said ‘probably wouldn’t have killed’ him but could have ‘made [him] blind’.
Three Day Millionaire is out now on Netflix.
