Emmerdale’s Louisa Clein says she refused to film Maya’s paedo abuse scenes

Emmerdale actress Louisa Clein has admitted she refused to film certain scenes during her abuse storyline.

Paedophile Maya Stepney was abusing her stepson Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) for months before it came to light – and she ended up pregnant.

Though her ex-boyfriend David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) was later confirmed as Theo’s biological father.

But Louisa has admitted that there were some scenes that went a little too far.

"Sometimes the writers would write something so simple and we would both go, ‘I don’t think that’s necessary, I don’t think we need to show that’," Louisa explained on the Soap from the Box podcast.

She told the Emmerdale crew that some things should instead be left to the viewers’ imaginations, adding: "I think it’s actually far more effective if we show less or if the words say more as opposed to the action.

"I think we all felt very protected and very looked after.

"Joe-Warren and I had a great relationship. We were very open about things and could really talk about how comfortable or uncomfortable we were about things," she said.

The 42-year-old actress has revealed in the past that she has experienced real-life abuse for her portrayal of Maya in the grooming storyline.

She recounted a situation in a shop where someone called her a "b***h" while she was with her two-year-old son.

"I’ve had a few slightly older, unattractive men shouting at me going, ‘Oh, I’m too old for you!’" she continued.

She’s had to point out that what goes on in Soapland is a far cry from reality.

Maya’s continued abuse was finally uncovered in 2019, and she was eventually arrested and suspended from her job as a school teacher.

But she didn’t disappear from the Dales entirely, and made a surprise comeback when she was released from prison early and revealed to be pregnant.

This week, her former co-star James Hooton made headlines as he suggested he may not have the Covid-19 vaccine because he believes his vitamin-rich diet will stave off the virus.

The Sam Dingle actor told his 18,700 Twitter followers: "I’m 47 years old. I take Vitamin C, D, Zinc, B-12, Q10 and anti virals such as Andrographis, Sambucus, Curcumin, along with regular exercise and a varied diet.

"I may not be taking a Covid vaccine.

"I may be labelled 'anti vaxer' for being pro immune system, pro informed choice," he added.

But followers weren’t happy with the news, with one commenting: "Disappointed in this statement James. Shocked in fact."

Another said: "Not a team player, James? It’s good you are okay, but taking the vaccine is about protecting those who are vulnerable. You’ve only considered yourself in your decision according to your tweet, which essentially says, 'I'm alright, Jack.'"
