Emmerdale seems to confirm unexpected person who exposes Nicky's secret to Gabby

Gabby Thomas’ (Rosie Bentham) wedding planning was in full swing in Tuesday (May 23)’s Emmerdale episode following fake fiancé Nicky (Lewis Cope)’s request to bring the nuptials forward so his fake father could attend.

Nicky has woven this web of lies about a fictional father, who he claims has cancer, because he needs to marry Gabby quickly as part of the scheme that he and his real dad, Caleb Milligan (William Ash), have to destroy Kim Tate (Claire King).

It also suits Nicky to get the wedding out of the way quickly because he is hating every second of having to pretend to be in love with Gabby, as he is really in love with a man called Ally (Josh Horrocks).

Having accepted all of Nicky’s lies so far, Gabby readily accepted the one about the seriously ill dad and brought the wedding date forward. This means she only has a couple of weeks to prepare rather than the six months she’d originally planned.

On the agenda in this episode was wine selection and organising who would walk her down the aisle. This latter decision was an easy one to make for Gabby as there was only one person she wanted to be by her side as she walked down the aisle – her mum Bernice (Samantha Giles).

At the Woolpack with Nicky, Gabby told Bernice that she was her first and only choice. Bernice was delighted.

‘It’s probably the last time I’ll get to walk down an aisle anyway,’ she sighed and mentioned her four failed marriages.

‘It’s not my fault if 50% of my husbands turned out to be homosexual,’ she pointed out, understandably causing Nicky to look slightly uncomfortable.

Bernice’s first marriage was to Tony Binns. After being together for four years she returned home to find him in bed with another man.

A later marriage to Lawrence White (John Bowe) was complicated by the fact that Lawrence had been imprisoned and forced to undergo aversion therapy in the 1960s to ‘cure’ him from being gay. This affected him throughout his life, including his marriage to Bernice.

‘People need to be more honest before they say “I do,”’ Bernice continued and asked Nicky whether he had any skeletons in his closet that Gabby should know about. The poor man only managed to respond with a bit of awkward laughter as Gabby insisted, ‘There are no skeletons and there is no closet.’

There very much is a closet and Nicky is having to stay firmly in it as, despite coming out to a relatively sympathetic Caleb, his father is determined that Nicky should see the plan through no matter what the cost to him. Nicky is therefore being forced to play the devoted – and very straight – groom to be.

He may not be convincing enough for Bernice, however. ‘He’s got lovely skin, Gabby,’ she murmured as Nicky went off to get more drinks and give himself a bit of breathing space. ‘Are you sure he’s not gay?’

Gabby had no doubts whatsoever. ‘My gaydar is fully functioning,’ she said, gazing adoringly at her gay fiancé.

Emmerdale continues Wednesday May 24 at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
