Emmerdale viewers were a little surprised as Rhona Goskirk and Pete Barton called time on their romance for good in the latest episode.
Pete had proposed to Rhona this week, after a trying past few months for the couple.
But as they attended their surprise engagement party, they decided getting married, and even being together, wasn't meant to be.
Pete and Rhona tried everything to make their romance work, with her recent health scare sparking constant arguments between them.
Rhona underwent an emergency hysterectomy after an accident left her needing surgery.
It triggered the menopause and meant she could not carry another child, but Pete said he was okay with this.
However on Thursday, he finally admitted to Rhona that he wanted children of his own someday and that her and her son Leo "weren't enough".
After an honest chat airing issues on both sides, they mutually agreed to end their engagement and their romance.
Viewers were gutted for them and found the scenes "heartbreaking, with one fan tweeting: "I’m heartbroken for Rhona and Pete."
Another said: "Why am I nearly sobbing at Pete and Rhona ffs."
But other fans saw it coming and weren't actually that upset, referencing the months of upset between the couple with them rowing and considering ending things a number of times.
One viewer admitted: "Pete and Rhona are draining the life out of @Emmerdale at the moment."
A second commented: "Really nice scenes with Pete and Rhona, but I would have cared more had their break up not dragged for months."
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with extra episodes at 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
