EastEnders Nancy Carter star Maddy Hill leaves BBC One soap one year after return

EastEnders' Nancy Carter star Maddy Hill has announced that she has left the BBC One soap just one year after she reprised her role in Albert Square.

During Thursday's episode, Nancy made a surprise departure from Walford after learning that her boyfriend Zack Hudson had cheated on her with Sam Mitchell.

Prior to her exit, Zack proposed and Nancy considered forgiving him before a chat with her mother Linda Carter, where she spotted a bottle of vodka, made her realise that she can't trust anyone.

Nancy then announced she was leaving as it showed the character saying an emotional goodbye before she tearfully departed Albert Square in a taxi.

Speaking about her exit, Nancy star Maddy told Digital Spy: "It's been great revisiting Nancy and the Square over the past year but it felt like the right time to move on for now. I already miss everyone and feel so grateful to work with people I have so much love for."

While a BBC spokesperson added to the publication: "We wish Maddy all the very best for the future."

Maddy first joined the hit BBC One soap as Nancy in 2014 and she left in 2016. The actress then returned to Albert Square in 2021 to reprise her character.

Soap watchers were left in tears over the exit as they took to Twitter to share their thoughts over Nancy's departure.

One person said: "I can’t believe Nancy is gone again, she wasn’t back for long" with a crying emoji.

A different account put: "Really gonna miss Nancy #EastEnders."
