EastEnders Charlie Brooks ditched booze as ‘one glass would turn into 3 bottles’

EastEnders actress Charlie Brooks has revealed her decision to quit drinking has been ‘life changing’ after admitting ‘one glass’ always turned into ‘a bottle – or three’.

The former I’m A Celebrity Queen of the Jungle says she is ‘ready to stop partying’ and insists that quitting the booze is one of the ‘best things’ she’s ever done.

Brooks, who played murderous Janine Butcher in the soap opera, said she felt ‘life was standing still’ and struggled to stop at one glass of wine, drinking ‘a bottle or three’ instead.

Speaking on the White Wine Question Time podcast, the 39-year-old said: “I’m 40 in two [or] three weeks – steaming towards it – and I just feel, because it is a new chapter, for sure I’ve loved partying, but there’s so much more to explore.

“Heading towards my 40s, that’s where I’m at.

“I quit drinking a year ago. [It’s been] life changing. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.

“To begin with I wasn’t sure. I did a month, and I’ve been trying not to drink because I’ve partied quite a lot in my life and really enjoyed it, [but] always thought ‘it’s time to change. I don’t want to do this anymore.’

“I did a month and I thought ‘God, I feel so amazing.’ A glass of wine is never a glass of wine; it’s a bottle – or three.

“I was so fed up of feeling sh*t. Just repetitive behaviour patterns, feeling like I was doing the same thing all the time, and actually, I felt like my life was standing still a little bit.”

She added: “The acting world is hard, it’s really hard and there’s lots of brilliant actors out there. I’ve done some lovely stuff but you spend most of your time unemployed and not getting jobs, and that rejection.”
