The Blanchard family suffered a double tragedy with Caroline losing her daughter Natasha in 2007 when she drove a mini motorbike into the garage of the family home and hitting her head. Nine years later, with her death taking its toll on Paul, Caroline lost her husband. Paul suffered a cardiac arrest in the family conservatory.

Following their deaths, Caroline struggled to look at the back yard or even go to the back of the family home.

She also found it hard to stay on top of managing the family home as she was constantly reminded of Natasha and Paul’s death.

Wanting to transform the home for her son Reece and Paige, DIY SOS swooped in and made the property somewhere they could make new memories but remember Paul and Natasha.

The episode was incredibly moving and host Nick Knowles revealed it affected his colleague Billy Byrne in particular.

As Nick detailed the progress being made on the house, he revealed Billy had also lost a daughter.

He remarked: “There’s a chimney being lined, the plumbing is well underway, bedrooms are taking shape and Billy’s keeping the electrics on track.

“For him, this family story feels very close to home.

“He too lost a daughter all too young and understands better than most how paralysing grief can be.”

“I’ve just been thinking about Caroline recently and how their lives have got to carry on and everything,” Billy told Nick.

“I hope when they look out of that window now, she won’t have bad memories, she’ll have new memories to build on.”

Nick noted: “To lose a child is difficult and you know that.”

“Yes and to not have this breaking into tears every time you talk about her, you’ve got to accept she was part of our lives for 20 years,” Billy shared.

“Let’s talk about the 20 years that she was good and she was happy.

“We can stop shedding tears but it’s hard.”

Billy broke down into tears as Nick reached over to hug and comfort his colleague.

“Wow, well onwards and upwards,” Billy said before getting back to work.”

The Blanchard family’s local community came together in 2019 to help transform the house when they put out a call for volunteers.

Over 300 people from local businesses and building firms lent a hand and donated much-needed materials.

The house was transformed in just six days and left Caroline, Reece and Paige thrilled with their new home.
