Coronation Street pays tribute to legendary character in 'hidden' moment | The Sun

KELLY Neelan was in a contemplative mood during last night's trip to the cobbles.

But Coronation Street viewers may not have noticed she was part of a scene paying homage to another iconic soap character.

Wednesday's instalment of the Manchester-based ITV drama started off with Kelly stood on the balcony of 5 Victoria Court, looking at the street below and reflecting on her future as Kieron's voiceover could be heard talking about Gary Windass.

The wayward teen played by Millie Gibson then went back into the flat before imagining her late father Rick sitting next to her.

Over on Twitter, presenter and TV critic Michael Adams revealed that this opening scene was a tribute to Ena Sharples, portrayed by Manchester-born actress Violet Carson.

Michael shared a black and white image of Ena stood on her own balcony overlooking the cobbles after Kelly's scene.

"Bit of behind the scenes Corrie for you: tonight’s opening shot of Kelly was specifically written in the script to pay homage to this shot of Violet Carson, in character as Ena Sharples from 1968", the caption read.

Ena was mostly known as the widowed caretaker of the Glad Tidings Mission Hall but she was also famous for her harsh judgement on the activities and loose morals of fellow residents.

The gossip made her debut in the first Corrie episode ever aired on December 9, 1960.

She remained a familiar Weatherfield face during the 1960s but was less present in the cobbles during the following decade due to Violet Carson's declining health.
