On Sunday, the presenter announced he’d been given the diagnosis in 2020 and was told he had “months to live”. In a candid interview, he explained his concerns for his family and young children over the impact his illness would have on them. The 48-year-old also explained how being axed from Channel 4 staple A Place in the Sun left him in “a dark place”.

The father-of-three has shared the news the terminal disease has spread to his brain.

He explained: “I don’t know how long I have left.”

The star had initially chosen to keep his illness private, but decided to open up on his cancer during the weekend.

He explained the first warnings of his illness came while he was filming A Place in the Sun in August 2020.

“Within a week of flying back from filming, I was being given six months to live,” he told Hello! magazine.

“I had to go home and tell my wife, who was looking after our babies, that she was on her own pretty much. That was devastating.”

After filming more than 200 episodes of the popular programme, Jonnie’s contract for A Place in the Sun wasn’t renewed.

He told the publication: “The Escape to the County team were brilliant.

“I wanted to work and I needed to work for my own wellbeing and to provide for my family, they couldn’t have done more to help me.”

However, on his A Place in the Sun career ending, he continued: “I had been with the show for almost two decades, so physiologically, that was was a really big blow.”

A Place in the Sun bosses praised Jonnie’s bravery for opening up about his cancer diagnosis. 

They told Express.co.uk: “We were and remain, extremely saddened by the news of Jonnie’s illness.

“Our thoughts remain with him and his family at this incredibly difficult time.

“We applaud his decision to talk openly about his cancer.”

Reacting to the news, A Place in the Sun fans have expressed their sadness.

Posting a sweet photo of himself with his family, he captioned an Instagram post: “Got some sad news to share with you. I have told my story to @hellomag, out tomorrow. See link in my bio.”

Jonnie’s co-stars have also reached out to send their thoughts to Jonnie and his family.

Danni Menzies shared a photograph of herself laughing and hugging Jonnie next to co-star Jean Johansson.

She captioned the poignant pic: “You ledge @jonnieirwintv so incredibly brave to share your diagnosis with the world.

She added: “A true inspiration to us all to cherish all the moments we can with the people we love.

“Love and laughs always to you and you’re gorge fam xxx.”
