Emmerdale aired heartwarming scenes tonight, as Cain and Moira Dingle (Jeff Hordley and Natalie J Robb) finally got back together. The popular pair have had several rocky patches over the years, but it’s always been clear that they belong together.
As fans no doubt cheered at their screens, we couldn’t help but think of other soap duos who should follow Coira’s lead.
Whether we are waiting for them to become an item, longing for them to reconcile or simply want to see them back on track; here are the characters we hope to see coupling up in the near future.
Phil and Shirley in EastEnders
Walford exes Phil Mitchell and Shirley Carter are still friendly – with the latter even working for his ‘family business’. They have a complicated history which includes Shirley once shooting Phil, but despite everything she has always loved him.
Scenes with Steve McFadden and Linda Henry are always wonderful to watch, with plenty of chemistry between their alter egos – and it’s high time EastEnders got their characters back together.
Charity and Vanessa in Emmerdale
The beloved ‘Vanity’ were one of the most stable pairs in soap – until Charity became paranoid by Vanessa’s absence and kissed newcomer Mackenzie. Fans were horrified, and with Charity continuing to spiral after their split, a resolution may be a while off.
But Emmerdale has invested far too much time in creating the power couple to destroy them for good; and we’d like to hope that they will reunite eventually.
Darren and Nancy in Hollyoaks
‘Dancy’ were declared over once and for all after Darren Osborne’s affair with Mandy. But the magic between Darren and Nancy has never truly been broken, and although there’s no suggestion they will get back together we can’t help hoping.
It’s a testament to the talents of actors Jessica Fox and Ashley Taylor Dawson that their onscreen partnership continues to be so popular after so many break ups!
Nick and Leanne in Coronation Street
Nick and Leanne’s relationship is currently hanging in the balance during unbearable conditions, and next week Leanne’s son Oliver will pass away after a heartbreaking battle with mitochondrial disease.
Jane Danson and Ben Price have delivered flawless performances throughout, but their characters are struggling separately. So please, Corrie, bring them closer together – they need each other.
Jac and Fletch in Holby City
Resident ice queen Jac Naylor developed an unlikely bond with Adrian ‘Fletch’ Fletcher, and a romantic connection seemed to be brewing. But Jac refused to risk damaging their friendship, and that decision apparently settled things.
But Fletch and Jac’s scenes together always have plenty of warmth and chemistry, and viewers haven’t stopped hoping that these two will finally give in to their feelings.
Stacey and Martin in EastEnders
The Fowlers’ marriage collapsed when Martin lied to Stacey in a bid to keep her and their children safe and away from the Square. Now she knows the truth she loves him more than ever, but Martin is wed to her former best mate Ruby.
We would much rather see him reunite with Stacey, becoming a stronger and unbreakable unit. It looks like we’ll have a while to wait before this is possible, but we have faith they can get there.
Dawn and Billy in Emmerdale
This couple’s relationship was going from strength to strength, until Dawn shot and killed dodgy Malone. She was so disgusted with herself that she dumped Billy, then made sure there was no way back by sleeping with his brother Ellis.
Their sweet family set up with Dawn’s young son Lucas was one of the most watchable developments of the year, so it would be a shame not to revisit their story.
Tony and Diane in Hollyoaks
Hollyoaks’ veteran Tony Hutchinson left the family home to protect wife Diane and their children after his father secretly gave him doses of testosterone, resulting in his behaviour growing aggressive. Evil Edward has been manipulating them for months, wanting Diane for himself.
Tony and Diane have already overcome more than most soap marriages do. From baby swaps, kidnap and illness, to controversial affairs that we still wish could be erased from our brains; this couple have seen it all and even live happily alongside two of his ex wives!
With that logic, sending vile Mr Hutchinson the senior on his way and picking up where they left off should be no problem…if only it was that easy.
