Nancy Pelosi is one of the most voiced critics of President Trump’s first term, and this time it’s mostly on fire, largely out of succession She inherited the respect of Democratic leaders.
But this change happened this week after Mr. Trump directly attacked Ms. Pelosi’s local heritage and the city of freedom she loved.
The Republican president ordered the federal government to “eliminate to the greatest extent” the function of Presidio Trust, one of Ms. Pelosi’s proudest achievements as a strong San Francisco in Congress.
The trust oversees the former military outpost in the northwest corner of the city, known for its lush grounds, scenic hiking trails and eclectic corporate collections, all with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge in a repurposed Army building. . Residents think it is a city treasure and tourists flock to the bay beaches and parks.
“What is this purpose?” Ms. Pelosi asked in an interview Thursday morning. “It’s a distraction.”
“We can’t distract our country from what he does and what his co-president Musk is doing,” she added.
Ms. Pelosi is known for her reign under the first Trump and even tore up the pages of other NIA speeches in 2020. He despises her and the openness of the city she represents.
Many San Francisco residents woke up Thursday to learn that the director had become the latest sign on a long list of cuts pursued by Mr. Trump and Mr. Musk. The president issued an executive order on Wednesday night titled “Start Reducing Federal Bureaucracy,” which listed four “unnecessary” entities, while the Presidio Trust is at the top of the list. The groups had two weeks to show that they did not use any other federal funds except for the funds required by the regulations.
Republicans received a $200 million grant to Ms. Pelosi for her final year as House Speaker. Presidio Trust spokesman Lisa Petrie said the money is part of the Inflation Reduction Act to be used for practical utility upgrades and infrastructure. Ms Pelosi said the money deserved because Republicans have previously provided similar grants to other national parks, but excluded the prime minister.
Ms. Pelosi has confidence in Presidio Trust and its 1,491-acre parks, residential communities and businesses to enjoy a good survival by relying on her own operating income and fundraising funds.
“If he wanted to insult something innovative and wonderful like Presidio, I wouldn’t accept it myself,” she said. “Some people don’t believe in city parks. We believe in city parks, which is why we have the Prime Minister.”
Ms. Pelosi relaxed her ridicule at Mr. Trump as she appeared at Marin Food Bank in San Francisco on Thursday afternoon to highlight how the Republican budget hurts the poor.
She repeatedly referred to the president as “his name” and mentioned in his recent declaration on the Truth Society that he was king.
“What king?” she asked. “In my case, this is the Emperor without clothes.”
The federal government transferred the former army to the National Park Service in October 1994. Two years later, Ms. Pelosi worked in Congress with her friend Dianne Feinstein from San Francisco, creating the Presidential Trust to run it. Legislation requires trusts to be self-sufficiency by 2013, otherwise the land will be sold.
The plan worked. Ancient military buildings were converted into housing for thousands of people. Others have become popular businesses including theaters, bowling alleys, yoga halls, trampoline parks, hotels and offices.
There are now playgrounds and schools. The new Presidio Tunnel Tops Park and a square named after Ms. Pelosi proved to be very popular.
The Walt Disney Museum is there. The same is true of George Lucas’s Lucasfilm Ltd., with Yoda’s statue perched in front.
The Chairman Trust raises funds by renting out these buildings and hosting events such as weddings and corporate meetings, which is enough to allow the park to operate without federal funds. Over the years, it has also received private donations, including funds from Mimi Haas, the billionaire for the wealth of Levi Strauss The mother of the heir and mayor Daniel Lurie.
Last fall, Ms. Pelosi stood in front of a smiling crowd at the 30th anniversary celebration, her hot pink suit was comparable to the blue blazer of the local businessman and the olive green uniform of the Park Rangers. Employees at Presidio Trust received an email Wednesday night from Trust CEO Jean Fraser telling them she believes the White House Office of Management and Budget does not understand the park’s self-sufficiency.
“I’m so sorry for this that has to cause your anxiety,” the email reads. “We need to be more of ourselves and our colleagues as we go through this together.”
Presidio Trust employees avoided Mr. Trump’s layoffs because despite being federal employees, they are not the civil service position the president targets. Some of the National Park Service employees who worked with them have lost their positions in the past few days.
Zoe Slocum lived in Presidio with her family for 15 years and they enjoyed the area so much that they recruited friends to live nearby. Ms Slocum said that in this place, the kids felt safe running around together, neighbors swapping butter and sugar, lawns were carefully trimmed and streets were kept clean. She noted that there were several private schools, a golf course and YMCA.
“All things Trump claims to love,” she said. “Of course, Trump has a hatred for Nancy Pelosi, but that doesn’t make any sense.”
Ms. Pelosi, 84, has experienced a tough few months. After Ms. Harris lost the presidential election, Ms. Pelosi fell on a trip to Luxembourg in December and had to replace her hip joints. She recovered at her home in the Pacific Highlands near the Prime Minister’s edge until she returned to Washington earlier this month.
She recently returned to San Francisco to help take care of her husband, Paul Pelosi, who was released from the hospital Tuesday after he received a kidney transplant from the couple’s daughter Jacqueline.
On Thursday, Ms. Pelosi didn’t want to introduce her personal plight (she sighed, she was doing “So-o-so”), but instead focused on condemning Mr. Trump and other Republicans for cutting these plans to cut them Plans, she said, are crucial to everyday Americans.
